hi
i got 3 british ration packs (menu C) this morning,

they are dated april 2003, jus wanted to know if ther is nethin i need to avoid like cheese spreads (read this on the site earlier). and also if they are still edible (pretty sure they are but wanted to confirm as i dont want to get food poisoning!) and how to cook them

. yes i no boil them or something but u neva know with me. only wish i got them yesterday after nearly burning down my kitchen

and havin to eat pot noodle instead of wat i made

I've never eaten an out of date MRE so I have no idea and I've never seen any British rations.

I only asked because I'm working on some scale representations of British Rations and at the larger scale the actual text maybe visible.

Those are simply packs that are being rotated from storage to training or operational troops. I ate an April 2003 pack the other weekend on exercise and they are fine. If you're lucky they'll have a Yorkie in them.

Cheese spread isn't put in them anymore as it didn't last. If you ever buy an old ORP and it has it in there (unlikely but double trouble if you manage to find one because it means its very old and quality control didn't get hold of it) don't eat it unless you're tired of it all and want to end it.

Menu C isn't bad. Heat the dumplings tho. If you get Treacle Pudding just don't even bother.

You can buy the boil in the bag meals themselves from a company called Wayfarer. They are exactly the same since they are the guys who make them for the ORPs. You can get them in most camping shops like Millets.

To cook you simply boil them in the bag for 10 mins or so depending on how hot you like them. Take off the plastic bag with the coloured strip first tho.

The oatmeal block can be eaten as a biscuit or mixed with water to make porridge. Or mixed with water and some hot chocolate mix to make a scrummy thing. The biscuits can be dipped in the "pate". The Lemon and Orange Powder is called Screech. Try some and you will discover where it got its name from. Alternatively shake some moist boiled sweets into the powder and you get sour sweets.

I notice thats Warrior you're modelling there. More than likely they'd be carrying 10 man 24 hour ration packs and so, if accuracy is your thing, you might want to bear that in mind. If its Desert Storm (Granby) you're modelling they'd almost certainly be 10 man tinned rat packs. Obviously the boxes would be much bigger than a single 24 hour ORP.

Thanks for the tips. I had started designing the 24 pack and have finished it plus the large box to hold 10. I was mainly just trying to show the 24 hr box for scale with the water bottle.

I was working on this for an Op Telic Warrior but do you know what the GS rations in use for Op Granby/Sabre looked like? Also what is the significance between the blue ink and black ink?

I'm in the US so I know very little about British rations.
