Anyone have a source for HDR's??
Anyone have a source for HDR's??
I am a vegetarian (well mostly) and a HDR fits me perfectly. I am looking for a decent source if anyone knows of one...
There was a guy on eBay selling a lot of them a while back but I haven't seen him post any lately. Also, Cheaper-than-Dirt (.com) had a bunch, too - but they were selling those for $80/case vs. the $40/case from the guy on eBay. But alas...everyone seems to be out of stock right now. Just keep checking eBay and see what pops up.
If you're just looking for entrees Emergency Essentials has several listed in both the entree section and as side dishes. The ones in their side dishes section look like they may have been HDR items.
If they don't have to be actual MRE components, but rather just retort pouched items, there are lots of vegetarian items that are being imported from India that can be found in supermarkets and specialty stores, as well as the Trader Joe's chain of stores. Be careful with the supermarkets though, I saw some of the$2.29 Tasty Bite items in a Safeway store and they were all priced at $5.39 each! Additionally there are a number of retort items that can be found in Asian grocery stores, as retort packaging seems to be very popular in Asia these days.
Additionally, My Own Meals has vegetarian Kosher/Halal entrees available directly from their web site. They are the suppliers to DLA for the Kosher MREs.

They're not HDRs but they may be right up your alley. Take a look at Epicenter's MRE page. It looks like they have some MARCs available that were packaged by Sopako. They're listed as Guantanamo Bay - Vegetarian Sure-Pak 12

I bought a case from him last winter. Rations were fresh, shipped fast, and it was neat to see what the HDR contains. I ate some and traded the rest.
HDR's are terrible! Bizarrely seasoned main meals (hope you like lentils) supplemented with monotonous sides. Every meal had the same stuff: apple Pop-Tarts, peanut butter, and crackers. You probably won't want to have these two days in a row.
This is excellent emergency food to drop out of a C-17 to keep starving people from dying, but if you want vegetarian meals for camping or SHTF stores, I'd recommend commercial products or vegetarian MRE's.

I think that can easily be explained by differences in cultures. I'm sure the recipients of the HDRs may also find that our MREs are equally distasteful if not contrary to their dietary constrictions.
Out west here in California we have very large communities that are primarily of recent Chinese immigration and in a Chinese restaurant there are often two menus, one that is solely in Chinese that caters to the Chinese diet that may be disagreeable to Americans (including those of Chinese ethnic descent.) And in the Indian restaurants you'll often find the dish that is commonly known to Americans as Lamb Curry by it's actual name, Goat Curry (though that may turn the stomachs of a few of us westerners.)
Though a friend of mine who was in Kuwait during Desert Storm did comment that the surrendering Iraqis literally ate just about any MRE that they were given (including pork,) but his comment was "Those poor bastards probably hadn't eaten in weeks."
