Microsoft Vista
In order to buy, sell, trade rations on MREInfo.Com you need an operating system.
I have a brand new, retail version of Windows VISTA. The DVD is new, never used or tested. The item was purchased from NEWEGG. It will not work on a DELL system. Again, brand new and never used or spun in a disc tray. Not a copy. Authentic version of Microsoft VISTA.
I'm offering it to you guys, my friends. Two free Microsoft support calls come with this disc.
Original purchase price: $229.00
Go ahead and make a PM offer if interested.
This is the Premium version of VISTA so the requirements to run the software is high. See link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... ments.aspx

DELL
In short, there are no DELL approved VISTA drivers that support the DELL Dimension 8400 system even though the system is not old i.e. 2004.
Some geek with like nearly 14,500 posts to his name in a tech forum claims he got it to work albeit some upgrades. I decided not to take the chance.
He was deceptive in all his responses even with his juke-mod-supreme whatever dork rank he's got wholly did not impress me.
Installing it on the 8400 system posed a risk. He would not admit that.

It sounds as if you have done your homework on the issue but I just have to ask, Have you run the Vista Upgrade Advisor?

Dell does have a bad habit of doing things their way, but they sell enough computers that Microsoft usually finds a way of keeping them compatible.

Vista
Yes, at the suggestion of Microsoft I ran the upgrade advisor. It came back and suggested the Basic version with some suggestions for software upgrades. Upgrades would have been necessary. The tech I spoke to mentioned (after the fact) that he dumped a bunch of upgrades into the system which is OK if you think you can save money that way.Big Galloot wrote:It sounds as if you have done your homework on the issue but I just have to ask, Have you run the Vista Upgrade Advisor?

I was able to get the motherboard manufacturer from DELL. It's a 925X motherboard. INTEL does not provide VISTA drivers for this motherboard. If after installing VISTA a problem cropped up due to a driver issue Microsoft can always deflect responsibility to the computer manufacturer. It's a bad deal.

Bummer!
There is a general feeling that driver problems are making the Vista upgrade path an undesirable option. That may explain why Vista has not been more of a success.
Intel does provide drivers for the 925XE chip set but not for your motherboard which is really a proprietary Dell board. Intel is one of three companies who OEM the board for Dell but Intel does not list it nor provide support for it. You would need to get support from Dell.
I have a feeling that XP will be with us for a while. I have Vista on my laptop and I am not impressed.

XP
To the best of my recollection XP was a better supported operating system
with industry support worldwide.
