Well, I think I'm finally ready to purchase my very first batch of MREs (after being a fence sitter for quite some time ) and I was wondering about getting through Canada Customs: have any of you been charged duty on your MREs, and if so, how much? Have any of you had you MREs seized or opened by Canadian customs agents? I am aware that UPS is not the best option since they charge a pretty hefty brokerage fee for getting the shipment through the border (I know, I used to work for UPS!).

Hey, I have never had to ship MRE's to Canada before but I did buy some IMP's one time and they sat in Canadain Customs for a long time before being released. I also remember one carton being opened then reclosed by customs. Something about the meat in one of the pouches? I think this was the time of "mad cow disease" threat going on or whatever.
But other than that I have shipped MRE's overseas by our postal service and according to the buyers none of them were ever opened and all got there in time. You may have to check "gift" on the customs forms to avoid those annoying fees they lump on you. Hope that helps.

I got charged around $40 on two boxes of MRE's a while back but I don't know if it was duty or a brokerage fee. I've got them before and it didn't cost anything so I don't know how it works, I'm starting to think it all depends on they're mood. Having them marked as a gift certainly won't hurt anyway. Probably doesn't help but this has been my experience.

I think when I got mine they used camping supplies or something close to that.

Just be glad you're not trying to get MREs through Australian customs. A guy I know in Australia has been buying MREs and every time they come in, Customs asks him for a detailed list of ingredients of every item in each MRE. They especially want to know if any of the items contain eggs.

Well that should be easy for him to answer ---- just have him open up the omelet entree, slide it out on to the inspector's desk and ask: "Does that look like an egg product to you??".

Do you mean the MRE Omelet has real eggs in it?!? :-)
