MRE Depot's menu c's...all gone?

Post by kidsluvmres » Sat Jan 19, 2008 9:06 pm

I noticed that the menu c mre's are no longer on Ebay? I'm assuming he sold out. Does anyone, or Steven himself, know when there will be more available? I thought he was supposed to be getting a new shipment in. Also, how many of you here ended up buying some?

We'll let Steve give us the official answer as to why they aren't on eBay anymore but from what he said in the Menu C thread, it sounded like they had a ton of them in stock.

I do have a case of Menu Cs and they really *are* all they're cracked up to be. I'll be posting some pictures soon but they do look as close to the real thing as you can get without buying military MREs from eBay.

Sorry about them not being on eBay. We did actually sell about 1,800+ cases in the first few weeks, and were in the process of adding them to our website when we got hit with 2 large government orders. We’ve since delivered both orders, and moved another load down from our overflow warehouse, but have gotten a request to purchase the entire lot in a military purchase outside normal channels.

I’m not a big believer in this kind of thing, since they usually want to pay you 40 cents on the dollar for it, but we did throw what we think was a fair price out there and agreed to hold off on future retail sales until they decide on the contract - of course the question will be weather they consider it a fair price or not  . That means I have to hold off on listing these for another week, but at the same time we do have another load coming across the country on a rail car as we speak, so even if they do take the rest of this batch, we’ll have plenty more by the middle of next week.

Plus, given the short track record on them and our surprise at how well they have been received, we’re working on a long term agreement beyond the next year and a half that we already have locked up so we can make sure that these will be on the market for many years to come (at least that’s my goal).

Just out of curiosity, did everyone that wanted some get them? I did keep a couple of pallets in ‘reserve’ for friends and family just in case.

Future Menue C entrees?

Post by C-rats » Sun Jan 20, 2008 9:31 pm

Hi Steve ---- I've got a quick question for you that all members will probably be interested in.

I believe you had said in another thread concerning the Menue C's that you were going to look in to "fine tuning" the menues in these cases (different entrees perhaps) for subsequent orders you were considering placing with your supplier. Any word on this?

I know it's all relative to the individual's taste buds, but some of us had questioned the choice of the omelet entree as being anyone's idea of a "pick of the litter" meal! Blaaaaaaaa! :x

Good point AND good question ‘rats! We’ve scratched our heads at some of the menu selections as well. Cheese Omelet with Vegetables sounds great on paper, doesn’t it? But there isn’t enough Tabasco Sauce in one of these little bottles to make it taste (or look) any better than it is for sure. And I think it was someone here who pointed out that the Chicken & Dumplings came with BBQ sauce - I didn’t even catch that one  .

The good news is that we do get to make minor changes in the menu, as long as we do it a couple of weeks in advance of the next production run and they have the product available, so we’ve told them that we intend to take advantage of that. I’m sort of waiting until they tell me that we have no more time left, as I’d like to see what 2008 items that we’ll be able to include - unfortunately that means that I don’t know exactly what that means for a timeframe for us to receive them, but it will probably be a 2 or 3 months from now if I had to guess.

Rest assured that once I have the list of available items to us, I will be running it by the group, as I’d love the input from the guys who know more about MREs than I do.

I also know that there are some minor variations in the 3rd load of MREs that we got with the initial shipment, although we haven’t been able to unbury it and confirm some of the things they said should change. Once we’ve done that, we’ll get the new menu list up for review, but it looks to me like they only made a change from the Meatloaf to either Penne Pasta or Pork Rib, but it is not really clear to me at this point. Plus I think some of the sides and desserts changed a little. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I know more.

We asked the question on some of the menu selections before we committed to this, and they told me they were kind of scratching their head on some of the selections as well. He did say one thing to us that made a lot of sense; “Often the folks doing the buying/selection aren’t the same folks who do the eating” (i.e. they usually don’t have to eat MRE’s themselves). So I guess that holds true for the civilian sector too - not just the military.

The only good reason I can see to include the Omelet entree is because someone thought it'd be a good idea to include a "breakfast" MRE in the case. I'm as terrified of the Omelet MRE as the next guy, but I have to admit it really doesn't taste as bad as it looks. If you close your eyes and taste it, you can definitely taste the cheesy flavor (it's a "Cheese and Vegetable" omelet after all). And if you're lucky and have saved up five or six little bottles of tobasco sauce AND you throw in the hash browns w/ bacon, you'd actually have a nice little breakfast.

That said...I'd still remove it from the menus. :-)

I agree - it sounds great on paper... The flavor isn't actually too bad, you're right. I just have a hard time looking at it when it comes ouut of the pouch.

It's probably better to just mash the heck out of it and pretend it's scrambled eggs with cheese and veggies.

It has my vote to be replaced as well!!

How could you have a hard time looking at something as appetizing as this? :-)
