Newbie help

Hey everyone. My partner is really in to MRE's and their youtube videos. Everytime I cook he asks me to 'get that on to a tray'.
His birthday is coming up and I need help. I know very little.

What MRE would you recommend I get him for his first one? He has said something about spaghetti seeming good.

Where do I find coffee instant Type 1, 2, and 3? Apparently Type 3 is awful and Type 1 is awesome, but I thought he could find out for himself. I can't find Type 1 anywhere, but I don't rly know where to look.

Thank you,

Angel

Hey, I believe type 1 coffee instant was found in 1980s MREs, up to 1986 I think I remember reading? You can either buy a 1980s MRE(~$20ish), or wait for someone with a stockpile to speak up.

Coffee instant type 1 was in acc packets up until 1988 and a few stragglers in 89 with an overlap of your first gen FD Taster's Choice. Boy I wish I had a big old stockpile of them myself - maybe if you consider 20 or so of them accumulated as a stockpile then here I am speaking up.

Speaking of stragglers from 1989 - I just got my first brown bag MRE and it came with an extra accessory packet with it. Friday the 13th 1989, probably one of the last type 1s ever made :D .

You got a really nice one there with the box of Chiclets, cap - something about the ones in those little boxes... they rarely get stale and hardened up. I like the 2.2 gram net ones more than the 2.5 - not 100% sure if it is simply the .3 grams less that makes it taste a bit less strong? Or perhaps it was it's final formula. Either way, they are a treat to have every now & again. I usually give mine away now to patreon folks as a surprise extra. Which leaves me with a couple to enjoy each season. :)

Any meal is good, if he's never had one!

Just mind the packing dates. Something produced in the last few years will be your best bet.

Omgoodness! What great info. Thanks everyone! Okay! I'll aim for a newer one for his first.

I'm going to find him a tray too, this is going to be fun!

I know that reviewers need to put the meal out on a tray so that the viewers can see it, but I've always thought the chow tastes better eaten straight out the pouches. Lol.

I also prefer to use a canteen cup for beverages, not a regular glass. Maybe suggest that he dig a hole in the backyard to sit in while he eats, too. Fresh air and dirt complement an MRE nicely. Rain, too, if possible. 8)

Hahaha

Can I put birthday balloons in the hole to make it more festive? I'll set up the sprinkler to simulate the rain.

I wonder if there is a birthday cake mre...
