okay i am thinking about purchasing a kel-tec plr-16 my local gunshop has one for 510.00. does anyone have information about this. i just want it to play with. and for defense. i like that it uses my standard m16 mags and since i have a bunch of .223 ammo that would be nice. i am also considering one of the olympic arms ar-15 pistols. but they are much more expensive. has anyone shot or seen this kel-tec weapon if let me know what you think about it.

I've heard varying things about kel-tec, but it seems to be a pretty average sort of reputation, nothing great, nothing terrible, but there will always be a lemon here and there.

I have the olympic arms k-16, and I love it. Never a FTF, FTE, it's a pretty nifty AR15 for not a whole lot of money. I would like to get the handguards upgraded to fit accessories, but even with just the knurled grip and a simple 6x fixed scope with illuminated reticle, it's freaking awesome, I just want to make it tacticool. Anyway, that's my endorsement of Oly, just remember if you buy from them to do the barrel break-in correctly and not to shoot steel cased ammo as it voids your warranty. I love the lifetime warranty.

Meh, I posted a pic of my rifle on here somewhere but I can't find it in the search function, oh well, it looks like pretty much every other AR out there that's not a carbine.

I'd go Oly because of the warranty, YMMV.

If you want to spend that much of your hard earned cash wisely on a defensive arm, buy a 12ga shotgun ---- not that.....that.....that thing.

C-rats - got any recommendations for a brand of shotgun?

Remington 870, the best shotgun ever made. Not really but it's the most widely owned shotgun for a reason, it's reliable, durable, well built and cheap. I highly recommend.

Boy, now there's a loaded question Kman.

I think it would be agreed that the Remington model 870 has probably been the "Industry Standard" for law enforcement for at least three decades (and popular for civilian defensive use during that time as well), although there does seem to be an increasing incroachment in to the law enforcement arena of the Hk/Benelli "Combat Shotguns" (more so in the realm of so-called "SWAT" Teams). The Remington 870 has been around practically forever and is a well proven design. You really can't go wrong with it.

Mossberg also has well proven designed defensive shotguns. Their model 500 series are popular in the civilian market as they are usually considerably cheaper in price than the Remy's, and "tons" cheaper than the Hk/Benelli weapons. Also, I would say that any accessory you can get for a Remington you can get for a Mossberg as well (that's that "tacticool" stuff BigMark is referring to). The Mossberg model 590 (their military contract model) can be purchased for under $400.00 on the open market. I've seen the Big 5 sporting goods chain stores run specials (frequently) on the Mossberg 500 "Defender" model for somewhere in the neighborhood of $250.00 or so.... a very good price for a well made, no frills defensive arm. I normally recommend this exact shotgun to friends looking for a home defense shotgun.

All that being said, what does C-rats have and use? Well, in my collection I have 3 defensive/combat shotguns..... Normally "behind the door" I have a locked & loaded Ithica model 37 Trench Gun. In my safe I have both a Mossberg 590 and a Hk/Benelli model M1 Super 90. I purchased the Mossberg mainly just to add to my military firearms collection since it is the military contract model. The Ithica is also a military model, but from the late 60s & early-to-mid 70s issue era. I've had it the longest and fire it the most frequently, so it's the most familiar to me. In the dark and in a high stress situation, that's a real life-saving issue. As for the Benelli......well, it doesn't get any more intimidating to your opponent than when you present yourself with either a Benelli M1 or M3. They're extremely rugged and well made firearms, and have a well deserved reputation for being highly accurate..... and very expensive. I believe the M1s & M3s are going for well in excess of a thousand dollars each now.

For the first time buyer? Buy a Mossberg in the model 500 series. It's a well made firearm and a good investment for your peace of mind. And you can't beat the price!
