300HP ride

Yes they do, and it was a miracle that the vehicle was merely dis-abled with a thrown track instead of a direct hit or else our services would have been un-necessary. Just shows how little the Soviets valued the lives of their soldiers.

300HP ride

Post by biscuits brown » Sat Oct 02, 2010 11:18 am

In many ways the BMP was a brilliant design, the first IFV but Soviet (and now Russian) ergonomics errors almost seem like self inflicted design sabotage.
The Russians do that a lot. They had an advanced anti tank protection system (called arena) on their MBTs but when used it showered friendly troops with splinters from the projectiles. Thus effectively wiping out infantry cover. I think its still in use.

To me it was technical "easy", you have the same pedals like in a car. Accelerator, break and clutch. Drive it like a truck.
The steereing "wheele" is like a bikes bar. Just keep an eye at oil pressure and air pressure (breakes)

If you can drive a car, you can drive a BMP tank  It´s just bigger

It´s Russian technic, easy but reliable! No electronic brick-a-bracks.

Ja, you have to be pretty "slim"

You can see the fuel hose on top and bottom of the door.

Have you seen the new Namer IFV?

It is very big. 65 tonnes. Notice they are almost high as the merkava 4 in the middle.

Wow...

I read it´s based on a Merkava IV, that´s why he is *this* big.
The name "Namer" means "Leopard", like the German MBT :D Speaking of German tanks, they use German made MTU Diesel engine for their Merkava IV and Namer tanks

Love the flag Ollie

And the merk 120mm gun is inspired by the Reinmetall 120mm. I like Israeli and German designs. Pleasing to the eye.

One thing that sets the Bundeswehr and IDF apart from the former Soviet Union; crew survivability and comfort are high on the list of priorities (within reason of course). I recall seeing a British infantry fighting vehicle in desert storm, it was a command version which actually had a toilet on board! Anyone from the UK that can tell me what it was? I believe it was the Warrior.

Probably was an officers private "thunderbox". The British army has a tradition of carrying officers toilets around. Really.
There is a command variant of the warrior, and it was probably a privately purchased luxury item.

Considering the NBC state of alert was very high during shield/storm I can well understand it

Could well be, biscuits brown. I recall seeing it parked with a Samaritan armored ambulance, which struck me as odd; the command vehicle was covered with antennas and had a couple machineguns mounted and the Samaritan was covered with Red Crosses! Me thinks the Samaritan crew would be in trouble if the Iraqis had opened up with some heavy firepower to take out the command vehicle.BTW this toilet appeared to be built into the sidde of the interior, near the rear door/ramp---of course I'm struggling to recall exact details from 20 odd years ago

Sorry I did not see the pic you posted. As I recall the command vehicle was very similar to that but it had a higher profile, boxy rear section, kinda reminded me of an M-577 but bigger.
