Its a cult film, I think, one of Peckinpahs last, and is highly unusual certainly for the 70s, to show the war from the German perspective.

Love some of the non regulation Heer hairstyles but equipment, uniforms and insignias seem 100% accurate and well researched. I want to read the original book, The Willing Flesh, by Heinrich.

I've watched that movies maybe 10 times before, it's really great. Some of the guys just miss a "peace" sign or "born to kill" on their helmets, very Viet Nam era but I love the character of the old grumpy, disillusioned sergeant.

I still have it on VHS. I watched it so many times...

Being a fan of Peckinpahs since "The Wild Bunch" once you see his name in the credits you know exacly what you are getting into. His use of slow-motion is second-to-noene. Plus, I grew up on true actors like Coburn so when I saw his name I got comfortable, settled in, watching it non-stop! I knew I wasn't getting up after watching the opening scenes of Coburn's patrol attacking the Russian mortar position, again the slow-motion really held me captive.

Did anyone recognise the German Captain? If you like "A Bridge Too Far", towards the end when Anthony Hopkins' character is in the street with his fellow wounded Para's the "Captain" appears and offers Hopkins a capture British chocolate bar from captured air dropped supplies seized from the over-run drop zones. Oh my God! Talk about weird. Im sitting here eating a Dak's Ham (Product of Denmark)! Roll Twilight Zone soundtrack - now

I agree the technical accuracy - let's over-look those non-reg hair cuts! - was spot on. I liked seeing Russian troops actually outfitted en masse! Usually it's just the ones in the immediate field-of-view with the others "lightly" outfitted. Afterall, they have to "rent" that equipment. But true to Peckinpah's style he didn't cut any corners! Look at all the armor! Heck, I bet Band of Brothers had a budget Peckinpah could never have imagined and they ended up slicing-and-dicing tanks, throwing different hulls on a limited number of chasis with added fiberglass to make things more convincing.

If you haven't seen them already try looking for "Come and See" (Russian film about a kid that ultimately joins the partisans. Very interesting ending that makes you think.). Also look for a film based on a true story called "Europa Europa". That one is really good. It's an autobigraphy about a Jewish youth who passes himself off as German. He ends up doing it so well he gets accepted into the Hitler Youth were he becomes a model member. I won't give any more away.

Heck, I may watch this again this weekend!

I've seen "Cross Of Iron" and "A Bridge Too Far" last week... so that's the same actor, I'm not crazy! I'm starting to think that guy is a real Prussian captain

I've seen a movie about a Jewish boy by adopted by a Nazi familly (is it the same?). I've loved when the "specialist" examins the kid and concludes he's a perfect "Aryan" specimen

It could be the same movie. I think in Europa Europa there is a scene where the main character is examined by a "doctor" as part of his entrance requirements and the doctor is kind of stunned to see he has been "snipped". I seem to recall one scene where the boys from the local HJ camp are allowed to meet with the girls from another camp as part of the whole "reproduce for the Reich" thing. A girl he is with notices the same thing the doctor saw and I think she immediately knows but keeps his secret. I would have to dig my video copy out and watch it again. Been years so maybe this is the excuse I need?

But if you haven't seen it definitely check it out. It's very interesting especially since it's auto-biographical. Rather than the character trying to convey what is on his mind the actual subject of the film speaks while scenes are occuring, telling you what was going through his mind at that exact moment. Very revealing.

Not yet! In the German version, it sounds like the "Wallon" Belgians speak with a Dutch/Flemish accent, wrong?
