All Quiet On The Western Front

Post by jfko6 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 8:00 pm

All Quiet on the Western Front is a 1930 American epic pre-Code anti-war film based on the 1929 Erich Maria Remarque novel of the same name. Directed by Lewis Milestone, it stars Louis Wolheim, Lew Ayres, John Wray, Arnold Lucy and Ben Alexander.

All Quiet on the Western Front opened to wide acclaim in the United States. Considered a realistic and harrowing account of warfare in World War I, it made the American Film Institute's first 100 Years...100 Movies list in 1998. A decade later, after the same organization polled over 1,500 workers in the creative community, All Quiet on the Western Front was ranked the seventh-best American epic film.[6][7] In 1990, the film was selected and preserved by the United States Library of Congress' National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." [8][9] The film was the first to win the Academy Awards for both Outstanding Production and Best Director.

Two things stand out as weird about that article -
1) The Film is from 1930 (article says it's from 29, which is when the book was published).
2) The 100th Anniversary of a movie from 1930 is 2030, 19 years from now. 100th Anniversary isn't some arbitrary term, it's specific

100th Anniversary
DVD's are often marketed in such a way that the fans don't know if a follow-up title will ever become available. The remastered and restored version of the classic film has gotten a new cover and is being marketed as the 100th anniversary Collector's series so the article was written that way (see DVD cover). However, the film often appears on AFI classic movie lists of best films in the last 100 years.

The film itself (I seen more than once) has had various dates thrown around including 1929 which would then put it under production, already produced or, still under production. The film credits do say MCMXXX, however. Still rather moot. But other sources have dated it at '29 and I remember seeing it in college and the date '29 sticks out.

The first thing I did when I got your e-mail was pull a copy of my book for fact checking. Not to be picky but the book was first produced in '28 -- in German.
I did not know it was publishes in '28.

Also, btw the blu-ray and DVD version won't be released until next year.

Pettiness aside, this is a great film and I highly recommend it.

Nothing fishy in the article.

This makes alot more sense - it's Universal Studios' 100th anniversary next year. They opened up in 1912 so this movie is just one of many being re-released under the 100th Anniversary heading.

One of the best movies made. While the classic black & white version is the best, the later remake starring Ernest Borgnine and 'John Boy' wasn't bad either. I watched the classic probably within the past year, probably on AFI and it's still one of those films that makes me cancel all plans, turn the phone ringer off and want to be left alone.

Thank for posting it!
