German Einmannpackung (2012) - Typ I

Post by MREHungary » Tue May 03, 2016 11:32 pm

Hi guys!

This Easter I had plenty of time, so I made a bunch of review, but I took me almost one and a half month to finish the cutting, dubbing and what-so-ever. The first review from that weekend is the Type I of the German Einmannpackungs (One Man Packages). This is an older variant, a classic. Please enjoy:

In Hungarian (Part 1):

In Hungarian (Part 2):

In English (Part 1):

In English (Part 2):

Pro:
+ The main entrées are out of this world, they are that good. I liked the rice pot and the ravioli too. Both were very tasty, well spiced and filling. And I like the packaging of the main dishes.
+ The jams are really-really good. You can taste the apricot and the black currant in them, they are not just some spreads to have a sugar overdose.
+ I never liked rye-bread. I do not like the smell of it, the taste or the texture. So I had my doubts regarding the canned bread ... but I changed my mind! They are actually very good. Next time I visit Germany, a must buy for me.
+ The box itself is compact, lightweight and simple. A very good design.

Con:
- The worst experience in this ration are the isotonic drink. Comes in two variants: exotic and grapefruit. Neither of them was good. They had an artificial almost plastic like smell and taste. I have some newer variants of the ration, where they replaced these abominations of beverages, so I am eager to taste them.
- THE TEA! Oh boy!
- Two meat products are in the box. The only difference I could feel between them, that one had little green dots in it (pistachios) and they had different names. But they looked the same, smelled the same and tasted the same. A little disappointment here.
- The challenge was to eat only this ration on the day and I failed it. It was not enough for me, some snacks or a heftier breakfast should be in the box. I had to eat some sandwiches to go through the day.

I had a very great experience with this little cardboard box and the content of it. The meals are great, the beverages not so and I miss some additional snacks. Some dried fruits or a nut mix, that sort of things I would really like to see in this ration. Maybe the newer ones have them.

Thank you for your review. I like to see how other peoples "rate" our rations.

You mentioned we had 5 types before. here is a little more info about that.

During Cold War era, we had 4 types, I-IV. After Cold War, they planned no rations were needed anymore so they stopped producing but had to realize with now UN peace missions (1993), rations are needed again so the came back with EPas Type I-III.
When Germany joined Afghanistan, they figured out just 3 types of rations sucks a little and they need something more practicable, so they came up in 2010 with now 19 different types of EPas with canned, but also freeze dried entrees.
(Also "EPa leicht", but that´s extra)

I´m sorry about the beverages, I don´t like them either  Old Epas had "orange" (great taste!) and "grapefruit" before but the newer one, they got these ones. "Younger" generation soldiers allegedly like them as "Exotic" may taste like "Red Bull" a little.

Their biggest mistake was, to change from the white, paper sachet tea (very richt tasting tea) to that new style "outdoor tea." I don´t know from what that dishwater is made from, but it´s anything but tea

One EPa has ~3.400kcal and (should be) enough food for a day. That equals three MREs, not in amout of "things to eat" but the energy is the same. To me in person, one EPa is enough for a day. You get a breakfast with brad + jam or pate. You have a canned lunch and dinner and two snacks either that fruit salad or a semolina dish, also a package of "Hartkeks" with 400kcal, that´s more a MRe entree has (230kcal).

Isn't brotaufstrich a kind of butter spread not a margarine? I would not recommend anyone to eat margarine but butter yes.

I will wait you to reupload second part in English to continue the watching

You are right, its kind of butter.
It´s made from milk proteins and clarified butter. It can be stored at room temperature at least 3.5 years, but must also withstand temps up to 44°C (112F) for three month.

Now the links should be alright. It was too early in the morning :D

Do you know why 19 variants? It is a very odd number. Why not 20?

I checked a newer version and it recommends to use hot water (this one said I can use both hot or cold). Maybe it will taste a little bit better with hot water :D

Cold water?! We never have tea made from cold water...
Yes use hot water! But even with hot water, that new, shiny tea bag type tea is a big disappointment to me
