Russian 24 Hour Ration Menu 1 - Ongoing thread

Post by Rahzmataz » Sun Jun 17, 2018 10:07 am

After I had a great time working my way through the Polish ration, I took delivery of a Russian ration. I'm part-way through it at the moment, so I figured i'd kick off with the unboxing. Here we go...

It comes in a decently thick green packaging. The pack has a handle, and is resealable, so it's become my spares bag. I'll probably throw it in my car as an emergency pack at some point.

Inside the green pack is a cardboard box full of all the goodies! When opening the box, you're greeted with the following sight:

I'm going to attach a bunch of photos here that show all the contents out on the table. Sorry for the picture spam!

The contents list on the back of the pack is in Russian, and i've done my best to get a decent translation. Take this with a pinch of salt, though!
Buckwheat Porridge with Beef (250g tray)
Beef and Potato Stew (250g tray)
Beef Stew (250g tray)
Wheat flour biscuits (4 packs of 8 )
Gentle Pate (2 50g packs) - I have NO IDEA what this is meant to translate as.
Processed Cheese (80g pack)
Vegetable Caviar (100g pack)
Prune and Nut bar (50g)
Apple Butter (45g pack)
Instant Coffee
Tea bags (x2)
Berry drink concentrate (30g, made up to 250ml)
Wet wipes (3 sets, cutlery/hands)
Salt
Pepper
Napkin
3x Spoons
Stove
Matches & Striker
Fuel Tabs (x3)
Water purification tablets

It feels like you get a fair amount of stuff in this, which I like. When it arrived, one of the cracker packs had a small hole in it, so I decided to eat them first. They didn't taste stale or anything so I figure it must have been very recent. Anyway, i'll go into more detail about that in my next post, when I can be bothered to write it

I really like how detailed your pictures are. I'm looking forward to the rest of this review.
It seemed like a good idea at the time....

Does anyone have information on the ingredients of the tinned cheese in English?

I ran the ingredients through Google Translate, it's not perfect but here's what I got:

Ingredients: fatty semi-hard cheese, butter, curd, cream, dry fat-free water, salt, melts (soluble phonon), preservative (potassium sorbate)

Thanks GabsAlot, I've got a few more to upload when I do my breakfast post.

The 'curd' is rather white cottage cheese and 'dry fat-free water' :) is powdered milk, degreased (drained from the fat) , salt, mets= special 'salt' used as melting agent

Cheers dude! I was hoping someone would be able to provide a slightly better translation, I was pretty sure "dry fat-free water" wasn't right :D

Edit: Actually I may as well make this my breakfast post!
For breakfast I decided to have the Buckwheat porridge, cheese, wheat flour biscuits, and a cup of tea. Buckwhat porridge isn't something i've ever come across before, so I had no real idea what to expect. Opening the pack, I wasn't all that excited to try it.
IMG_20180615_102231.jpg
I threw it on the included stove (I felt like I should try it, but honestly I consider the one from the Polish S-RG-5 to be MILES better). Stirring it was tricky because it was so solid. I did my best to mix it up, but despite that, I ended up burning a little of it to the bottom.
IMG_20180615_103017.jpg
It had a pretty pleasant smell while cooking, and despite my initial trepidation, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it. If anything, it was a little dry, but a cup of Russian tea helped to wash it down. It wasn't hugely well seasoned to be honest, but it was very edible. It's a real shame I burnt this, I was really enjoying it by the end.
IMG_20180615_104511.jpg
I decided to use the crackers with the slight tear in the pack, and they were totally fine. I'm not sure when it actually happened, but they were still nicely crispy so it must have been very recent. The cheese was... Odd. Not bad by any means, just very strange. For UK folks, it tasted a bit like what we call American Cheese, the individually wrapped slices that people put on burgers. I found myself eating the whole lot pretty quick, so it can't have been that bad!

I'll try to sort out a Lunch post soon.

In case of these Russian porridges it is a good idea to add a bit water after "mixing" (or rather cutting) it. It helps prevent sticking to the bottom

Watch out for that fruit bar sometimes it contains shells. When was this ration made, what date? It could be one of those viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9121 because I see ООО "Барышский мясокомбинат" on that cans.

PS
Although this is Russian ration more correct would be Russian MVD ration, because we say LRP or MCW, not just American MRE.
