German EPA typ I (2012)

Post by Delicious » Thu Sep 01, 2016 1:50 am

Probably you've read about this ration, so I will put only some most important remarks.
What are the characteristic features of this ration in my opinion?

1. Simple, thin cardboard box - rations are packed 6 pcs in one bigger, more robust box, thightly - for saving the space
2. No heaters or utensils, except matches, just one moist towlette (compare this to the special forces Russian, where you have 3 for hands and 3 for dishes...)
3. Not so many snacks/side dishes
4. Brotaufstrich - processed cheese, which can be treated as butter substitute, canned rye bread with very long shelf life
5. Hot drinks - coffee and instant tea (haven't seen in other rations), the creamer is based on milk
6. No meal compostion suggestion - you base on your brain ;)
7. No additional spices except salt

Overall this is a reasonable ration - no "fireworks" but the food is decent in quality and amount. Probably the reusable cutlery and heaters are more economical.

Mains: Indian rice and vegetables dish with poultry meatballs, ravioli filled with meat in mushroom sauce
Sides: corned beef with pistacchio, pork spam, processed cheese, crackers, rye canned bread, apricot jelly, backcurrant jelly
Drinks: isotonic drinks (exotic, grapefruit), coffee, creamer, sugar
Desserts: chocolate, farina with fruits

The ration tasted natural, was like bar/hotel food.

Nice review, thx for sharing.

Here is the philosophy about our rations:

The thin card board box is on purpose. Once the EPas are distributed to the soldiers we do spread the items all over the equipemnt (NBC mask carrier, rucksack, cargo pockets etc...) and dump the box. We don´t keep it in that box.
Delicious wrote: 2. No heaters or utensils, except matches,
Every Germany soldier still has his personal ESBIT cooker and his own cutlery so no need for providing them in each ration.

Delicious wrote: 3. Not so many snacks/side dishes
The Obstsalat (fruit salad)/Greißspeise (semolina, not farina) and the crackers are the snacks. These have ~+600 kcal.
There is no need for side dishes as the entree contains the sides.
Delicious wrote: 4. Brotaufstrich - processed cheese, which can be treated as butter substitute, canned rye bread with very long shelf life
This is not cheese but non melting margarine.
Delicious wrote: 5. Hot drinks - only coffee, the creamer is based on milk
On your own picture I can see 2 x coffee and 2 x tea.

Thank Housil
I just wanted to stress that the ration is not accidentally like that.
I wrote that the Brotaufstrich is a kind of cheese, because the ingredients are very silimiar to the porcessed cheese, and it tasted LOT better than a margarine :)

And it doesn´t melt even in great heat, also has a shelf life of up to 3 month in 44°C.

Nice review, thanks for sharing! The German EPA is certainly up high on my list of favorite international rations. :)

you're right - I forgot about the tea - it is also unusual - instant :)
