Canadian IMP #9 SHEPHERD'S PIE

Post by [ex-Member1] » Fri Jul 01, 2016 2:59 pm

Hello mates, this was my first IMP and I must say it's great. Amazing amount of food and drinks, although I miss that feeling I have when I open MRE... don't know how to explain it. IMP just lacks that survival, army, tactical, prepping spirit that MRE's have - not because it's bad, just because it isn't that well know I guess. But that's just my opinion that have nothing with quality of Canadian ration.

I've decided to make review on my Canadian flag, to boost up the theme a bit.

So, contents:

1. Shepherds pie (Baxters)
- awesome meal, heated in boiling water for 6min, shaked a bit - opened and consumed
- lots of beef, lots of potatoes, lots of corn
- tried it by itself it was great like that, with ketchup not so good - with hot sauce not bad but by itself it's just good enough to say for me it's open the bag and eat from it and enjoy meal

Image

2. Sliced peaches (Baxters)
-classic sliced peaches in some juice, but when I think about how it was packaged and it's shelf stable I give it a gold star

3. Peanut butter
- great but I didn't mix it good with my fingers while it was in a bag... next time I'll triple the time for neading it

4. Orange - pineapple sports drink (2 pcs)
- I coud taste both orange and pineapple, wasn't too sweet, only 2.5dcl

5. Nescafe 3in1 instant caffe
- one of the best classic all in one instant coffe with coffee, sugar, whitener all in one... I did put the whitener too... coffe was great

6. Hamburger bun
- I didn't like it... I was dissapointed when I saw I didn't got the pain bread, but I thought it's OK this one should be OK... but somehow hamburger bun isn't my mojo

7. Ketchup
- it was red

8. Whitener tea and coffee
- as I said I used it with coffee even the coffe already had some

9. Honey
- I don't like honey...but more info about it under number 11.

10. Sugar
- I used it with tea - had no effect at all lol

11. Tea - orange
- I was a bit shocked when I was reading the label it said orange - pekoe... now I think pekoe is a franch word for orange... very bad bilingual stuff from Canada for us foreign people... tea was good, mixed with sugar it wasn't sweet at all so I used that bag of honey to make it more sweet and overall better and I wasn't wrong to do it

12. Franks RedHot cayenne pepper sauce
- I turned more American hanging out with you guys so now I have tabasco sauce in my fridge, half bottle... before I had it for ages and almost never used it... now I put it even in my tooth paste...
- following above statement I did use this sauce Canadian govt. provided and it was good... I don't like too much strong pepper sauces but this was just fine, mild one I guess

13. Toilet/hand paper
- brown big piece of toilet paper or hand paper, looks like something from USSR ration... when I saw it Soviet Union was first thing I thought

14. Matches
- similar to MRE

15. Moist towelette
- didn't opened it

16. IceBreakers Frost (2 bombons)
- at first I thought it's chewing gum... but it was 2 small pieces of menta bombons

17. Beverage bag
- didn't used it I was at home and I decided to put this in my EDC rucksak because it's pure awesomeness or to say functional

18. Beef jerky - Hero Bros.
- I guess in field or a hike or somthing this is great to have in a pocket... but I wouldn't never buy it to eat it at home... here where I live we have so much dry smoked meat I find this to be like chewing old shoe... and I've eaten smoked wild boar and smoked bear meat, smoked fishes etc. all with sharp and rich taste, but this beef jerky is more like snack you nibble and bite while thinking where Mars Rover is in this moment and what is little guy doing right now

19. Spoon
- I think MRE spoon is better quality, but IMP one is more functional and easier to use and eat from it... also going into EDC bag

20. M&M's
- looked great, tasted great... didn't even bother to check best before date

Overall this ration is really great. I can imagine myself on some mountain sitting on a rock and something and thinking I don't have flameless ration heater and no way to heat the main up - what's wrong with you Canada? And maple leaf cloud would speak to me and saif "Fck you Croat eat it Cold, we Canadians manage somehow to warm it up even without FMH or mess kits in a field!". In my argue with canadian maple leaf cloud I would say even Chinese have FRH.

This meal is just good enough to be one real meal. I was outside working around my house all day and thought it's good time to crack it open and try. Wasted and tired from work it was good scenario to taste military ration made for days like this not for days when I'm doing nothing. And I'm satisfied a coffee (I'm a coffee man), tea, two fruit sport drinks, awesome main meal, cool snacks, great dessert... what to say I'm happy I got chance to taste this.

Thanks for reading this and one last picture for the end:

Great pics!

thanks for the review.

How was the bread different? (did you heat it)

(ETA: I think anything that isnt frozen solid is already considered warm in Canada hence no heater  )

I did heat it along with the maine. It was soft, smelled OK, I can't say it's bad but I would rather have crackers or wheat snack bread from MRE.

Great review. I agree with the jerky. I have had better. But you are right. On a long hike, it's nice to snack on. I really enjoyed the review and great pics. Nice bonus with the Canadian flag!

I kept waiting for the packet of mashed potatoes, what a wasted opportunity. I have one of these too courtesy of Bob, I think I'll have to go against my usual thing of only using what comes with the ration and have some mash with it...after the fact of course.

Cheers

I woud really like to find out calorie count on IMP mashed potatoes to find out is this the reason for not getting it in this ration. I don't believe honey has much less and we could all live without ketchup and honey if that would get us mashed potatoes.

And Gundog thanks for linking yt video

Just a suggestion, you could use the mashed potatoes out of the chicken cordon Bleu imp. Those taters are rockalicious!

Don't ask me why, but the "orange pekoe" actually refers to the leaf grade and not the flavor. :|
WikiPedia wrote: In the tea industry, tea leaf grading is the process of evaluating products based on the quality and condition of the tea leaves themselves. The highest grades are referred to as "orange pekoe", and the lowest as "fannings" or "dust".
