Canadian IMP Breakfast Menu 1- Beans and Weiners

Post by elandil » Sat Dec 13, 2014 5:36 pm

Ok, thanks to a good trade with Apocalypse, I have some IMP's to review. :D

So, I shall start with Menu 1-Beans and Weiners...
Image

So we have the Entree, and the fruit. In this case, Pineapple Tidbits
Image

Bread, Blueberry/Apple cereal, Instant Coffee x2, Hot Chocolate, and a Sports drink in a flavor i've never heard of before, Ice. Can't wait to try it.
Image

The usual Acoutremon....Gum, mint, matches, salt n pepper, tabasco, wet nap, toothpick, Bev Bag, nappy, Peanut Butter x2, Sugar x2, and whitener x2.
Image

The coffee with a Sugar and Whitener

Hot chocolate
Image

Both, mixed with Hot water
Image

The hot chocolate was a run-of-the-mill flavor. Nothing special, just a good cup of hot chocolate. The coffee, on the other hand, was a little deeper in flavor than the Freeze-dried you usually find in MRE's. Had more of a medium/dark roast flavor, reminiscent of a good Columbian blend.

My druthers, if I was eating this as a breakfast, would have been to heat about 2/3rds of a canteen cup of water, then dump in both coffee's, both sugars, both whiteners, and the hot chocolate. One big breakfast drink, a Camp Mocha. Would be interesting to see how it compares to the MRE version I make with only 1 of everything. (Hmm...I do have another breakfast menu to try, I may have to do a comparison... )

The Bread....Petit Pain...
Image

Sliced in half with Peanut butter on one of the halves.
Image

The bread was dry, but with a good crumb. Well defined cell texture, good crust. Went well with the PB, but would probably be better toasted with honey as a breakfast item.

The cereal..
Image

Not a big fan of oatmeal, I usually eat it dry to maximize flavor. This one was even bland dry, with a bitter aftertaste. Not sure if it was something to do with the powdered milk or preservatives, or the dried fruit. Maybe adding warm water and a packet of honey would have helped...

Ice drink mix.
Image

The drink itself is a great blue color, but the flavor was indistinct sweet. No real identifying flavor, and the sweetness was almost over the top. Great for caloric content in high activity environs, which is what it's made for.

the pineapple tidbits
Image
Again, less a pineapple flavor, more a sweetness with a hint of pineapple. Plus, the ascorbic acid made it look darker than it was. Sent a pic to a friend, his first thought was it was peaches... :?

The beans with Weiners
Image
Image

Not bad, less sauce and bigger chunks of meat than the american version. Tabasco really did help, but not too bad on it's own.

My lunch...
Image

Overall, it was a very satisfying meal. Very filling, even without eating all of the cereal. My hats off to the Baxter people, their Beans with Weiners was closer to my homemade version than you find on any of the supermarket shelves. Very impressed with the coffee and bread, Can say I prefer both over their American MRE counterparts. My main question would be if any of the meals come with a packaged cheese like the MRE's, because I could easily see cutting a pocket in the bread, filling it with cheese, and toasting it over a fire for a field grilled cheese sandwich... (another idea for a future review... 8) )

Another thing I must say I am a big fan of now, is the beverage bag. It made mixing a lot easier, so much so that I rinsed and dried it out, and stuck it back in my pack. It's definitely better than any of the bags offered with the MRE's, even if the main object of the Hot Beverage Bag is to be able to heat water in a FRH.

Any trans-fats's listed on the nutritional contents? Have you noticed any listed in any of the IMP's you have opened?

This is the first one I've opened, and nothing that I've noticed. Both boxes, the Beans and Weiners and Pineapple, both had Nutrition guidelines and both said 0 Trans fats. Nothing listed on any of the accessories I saw.

A blue drink eh? I'm an 'expert' on blue drinks - they're my absolute favorite. I'd be willing to bet money that it's the exact same flavor as one of these guys -

an indiscernible blue favor that might have notes of fruit and/or liquid. American's probably know this Gatorade flavor and I am uninformed of their availability outside the US.

Thanks for the review! Was the meat like a hotdog or something closer to a sausage?
The best possible MRE: 1lb bag of Jalapeño cheese spread.

It was more of a sausage texture .

Cool blue still has a hint of raspberry bleeding thru. The closest gatorade would be frost- glacier freeze. (Ice...frost... ...)

First that is a great review and I enjoyed reading it.
Canada seemed to have always issued good Military field rations. (at least what I can see from the Second World War until these days)

I read the review carefully and looked at the photos. My first thoughts are the bread appears to be the best looking field bread ever to grace a pre-packaged military ration. The beans and wieners look indeed to be a far more hearty version of the old U.S. version. North Americans will eat them Hot or Cold and I can attest to this from working construction jobs with Americans, Canadians and Mexicans all my life
From the photo they look appetizing and filling.

Last the Blue drink seems to look un-appetizing, maybe it is just the color. Blue drinks seem strange to me. What flavor is Blue?.
Am I alone on this thought?

Red drinks are Cherry or Strawberry
Orange is of course Orange
Yellow are either lemon or Pineapple
Purple is grape or Raspberry* (sometimes)
Greens are some sort of 'Gatorade' type Citrus flavor
Brown or tan is Chocolate or sweet
White is milk or dairy

Blue is..? Blue berry?
The human brain is perplexed at Blue food and drink :D

Anyway GREAT review and thank you

My (very) limited exposure to the Bread....Petit Pain.. left a lasting chemical taste in my mouth, most unpleasant.
Mind you, I've only had a couple of them, YMMV...
I prefer the German canned Rye or the UK Biscuits Brown.

I´m a big fan of Canadian IMPs, they are great. Thank you for this review and all the pictures.

As dirtbag mentioned, I had my "issues" with their bread too. It had a "weird" taste to me. Until somebody said, you have to warm it up...

Exactly right: Heat the IMP bread and it opens up, becoming lighter and more pleasing to the palate. CF types I work with keep perpetuating the story that this is an entire loaf of bread, compressed. I'm skeptical. Seems like at most 3 slices after heating and expanding.

Heating that slice of bread would have given you that wonderful British standby: baked beans on toast. It's one of my favorite breakfasts. I make mine with half a can of Bush's Original, a slice of buttered whole wheat toast = and I top the beans with a sunny-up fried egg. Fabulous fare.
