Canadian IMP 2013 Menu #9 Smoked Meat With Demi-Glace Sauce

Post by BTemple » Wed Oct 19, 2016 12:06 pm

Up next I have the last of the first set of IMP's I have ever had: Smoked Meat with a Demi-Glace Sauce. Sounds fancy...... you can always tell that's the case when all the English and French words on the package are the same. Haha

As usual I am certainly impressed with the vast number of components in this IMP, always lots of good variety.... but this one is missing a few things I would have liked to have seen, but I'll touch on that later.

Gotta love the Dr. Oetker drink, so much nicer than MRE beverage powders, always the right amount of sweetness and always a nice variety in flavours. I've never had the apple slices before, but the IMP fruit seems to be a bit better than MRE fruit as well, the syrup never seems to be quite as sickly sweet.

Dessert option number 2 was a Hersheys Caramel bar, one I've never had before and can't really remember seeing on store shelves here in Newfoundland.
Mmmmm oxidized chocolate....Since the chocolate degraded the caramel inside was also a little harder than it should be. Not the greatest thing ever. But I'm sure a fresh one of these would taste very similar to one of those Chunk Caramilk bars.

Good 'ol IMP bread with some peanut butter and raspberry jam... very tasty. I absolutely love IMP bread, but this one was juuuuuuust a little bit more stale than any other I've had, but still very good.
Smoked Meat and instant Mashed Potatoes as main and side... had to use some of the sauce to reconstitute what is called IMP potato "corner powder" that doesn't quite get mixed up right in the pouch. We've all seen the horror of this on several review channels on YouTube.... they should redesign the bags somehow. It always seems like the spoon clumps up right away after a few stirs and then you just can't really get down into those corners without feeling like you're going to burst through the pouch.

All the odds and ends left over. Second peach drink for later. I hate mustard so that'll get thrown into the accessory bag with the other things I don't use in all the rations I've had. I rarely ever drink caffeine, so most "accessory packet" type stuff usually never gets used.

And lastly, the review of the entree and side itself..... The final picture of this ration encapsulates the whole experience. Totally bland potatoes.... no hot sauce or Mrs. Dash or even salt and pepper to jazz it up. The Smoked Meat wasn't very good at all.... and the sauce did not help in any way to enhance the flavour. The meat just didn't taste "right" or like I assumed it should taste. But perhaps I'm just not a fan of pastrami.... that's been sitting in a pouch for a few years. Haha
Top it all off with the spoon breaking off mid-meal.... great times. It's pretty bad when the apple slices and bread were the best part of the IMP.

The last picture is 5 more IMP's that I had arrive in the mail yesterday, can't wait to tear into those soon. The Sausage & Hash Browns bag had already been torn open, so that one was free. I'll be trying that one next, hopefully nothing is compromised.

Have a good one, thanks for stopping by!

great review, :)

Sometimes you just get luck of the draw with some of these rations.

Really looking forward to the Hash Brown review, that looks interesting.

Hey thanks :)

Yeah this was the first IMP I've had where I didn't really enjoy it very much.... but it still wasn't as bad as the Ratatouille MRE I had a couple months ago... that was horrible.

Yeah I can't wait to try my first 2 breakfast IMP'S. I've never seen the 2014 Bacon and Hash Browns reviewed anywhere before.
