PLA Type 9 Ration #7 - Pork rice

Post by ancienttyrael » Tue Sep 27, 2016 10:55 am

I'm not gonna lie, these were not the greatest things I ever eaten. Extremely bland, I think an HDR has more flavor, or texture at least.

Image
Heres all the items, you got the meal, heater, a cake, fruit packet, drink mix, and hot sauce.

Image
Made the drink first, I thought I put in too much water but checking I put in the right amount. Barely any flavor, I couldn't tell if it was tea or a lemon drink.

Image
The "eggroll", if you can get the sausages, get the sausages.

Image
This was somewhat ok, its got some spice, odd discolorations though and I think the rice is overcooked.

Image
The long life shelf cake. I actually liked this, very dry but I can still taste the sugary vanilla.

Now I actually forgot to take a picture of the fruit packet which was pineapple chunks but I'll tell you right now its bland just like the drink. I know we add tons of sugar for our fruits but the chunks had no sweetness to them and the syrup was pretty much water. I honestly feel bad for the PLA guys eating this, Pot rice and dried pork slices would be alot more appealing.

I find the PLA rations to be more of a snack pack rather than a full meal. The beverage is more like a sports drink, just less sweet.

Chinese mil rations look like something from future where computer replicator makes you food.

Seriously that eggroll was something else, I can understand the appeal of one but this is the complete opposite of what an eggroll is :P .

I read some news where soldiers would just bring their own food to eat cause the rations are tasteless and unfilling. Hell, im surprised they just don't have packs of rice to give out, be happier eating that.

Awesome look into a PLA Type 09!

I am tempted to pick up a case of 12 and see what all those menus are like. I agree with Asger, it's like sci-fi printed future food. Kinda like outta Judge Dredd (the one with Stallone) with the "recycled food".

So most of the PLA's I've eaten, they were for fun off camera - but I did just do one from 2007 and the thing was still technically edible. Eating 9 year old pork egg roll is a little jarring.

I just had a Type 13 Self Heating Meal 2 weeks ago for dinner and absolutely loved it! But these Type 09 Self Heating have those cakes and other sides - at the expense of the 2nd entree that the Type 13 has. I am finding the 09' to be a little more balanced and appealing.

Have had Type 09' Emergencies out on a little adventure out in the desert earlier this month too - gotta say that pickled cucumber and whatnot are amazing to get that salt content back in order. And the food bars are pretty low-thirst provoking just like they were designed to be.

But now this really makes me want to get some of these here, ancienttyriel! Great pictures and thank you for sharing - you make me want to open my last PLA Ration now! It's 5 and a half years old but I am pretty sure it will be OK. ;)

Holy crap Steve responded to my post! :D

In reality these rations aren't bad even with the mystery tube egg roll (one thing I noticed is there seems to be different designs for the roll either a spiral patty or the tube). It's bland but than again there's that difference with American tastes.

Maybe the PLA will change their rations in the future, they are pushing hard to modernize and China is very diverse through their cooking styles. Maybe they can make the eggroll more realistic!
