You are correct, that is the Soviet Guard Badge that she found. It's called the Gvardia Badge, Russians or the Soviet soldiers wore that badge during the WW2.
Hard to tell if it's authentic, it may worth something if it is. However, these don't usually lay around like that on the surface, people mostly find them in graves along with the soldier.
