Dutch 24hr ration

Post by TechManDan » Fri Jul 15, 2016 10:36 am

I picked up a Dutch 24hr ration online and my first impression was what the hell is this? It came in a plastic zip lock bag taped closed. After a little looking into it I found out that's the way the made them. Due to it being bagged it got a bit banged up one hot cocoa drink slightly broke open and got powder every where and the jelly and paté tins were squashed l, but still intact. I am disappointed that it came in two months past the best by date, fortunately everything was fine.

It was nice to have a contents list in english, it made quick reference to what is what.

The 2 mains included was goulash and chicked stew. Both were hearty and delicious. Both contained lil potatoes that were perfectly cooked. The chicken stew tasted like a tomato based beef stew, at first I thought it was beef.

The biscuit browns were awsome and 3 packs too! The liver paté was good, not too strong liver flavor the way I like it. The tuna paté had a strong fish smell and soggy mushy texture, however it tasted great on the biscuits. The Mexican chili bean spread was creamy and reminded me of a decent bean burrito. The apricot jam and fruit spread were tasty. It was interesting to see them all come is the tiny containers.

The hot chocolate was a little grainy but tasted fine. The lemon drive was good, not too sour. I have yet to taste the instant soups...

The hot sauce was not hot at all, little disappointed. The sugar vitamin c tablets were were strange, they had a almost soapy flavor.
All in all, me and my sons enjoyed this ration, my youngest says it's his new favorite. I would definitely recommend these and will pick up more.

The sambal is i think a few years ago added, it is a commercial sample which is used in many cafeteria. Ifyou are used to use hot sauce, the sambal can be a little bit disappointed.
Many times I've had a dutch ration pack(box edition) and the added dextrose vitamin c tablets, always tasted strange ;-).

The content is always the same, 12 years ago the box edition had the same content as the current rations, ofcourse with less items.
Why it is still the same after all those years, i dont know.

Yeah the entrees are quite nice but it's just sad they didn't put more though into the bag and the accessories.
And Above all no peanut butter :x

I think the swedish 24 hour ration packs also come in plastic zip-lock bags. I'm not sure if other countries in Europe do that.
Good luck and may your rations stay unspoiled!
