I was able to get a IRP this week. I was delighted most of the items were different entrees and brands than the Russian Blue Bag Civil Defense meal
I want to eat these items in the field if I can, but did try on side dish last night. The apple sauce tin had apples on the label so there was no mistake on what it was.
Opened it up and there is a great deal packed inside

Ok my thoughts were at first taste. It was tart and tasted fresh and not processed. Second it was not ultra sweet like USA apple Sauce. Third, It did not have extra flavors like cinnamon or Cherry like USA apple sauce. Just tasted like a apple from the tree. Fourth the texture was ultra fine like Baby food.
You could drink this from the cup without a spoon.
This was just a little too fine for my tastes, but it was still good
I let my son taste it and he said ''I do not think they have added sugar, or very little" Then added it tasted like they took an apple from the tree ground it into a paste after removing the core and seeds, but leaving the red skin on. Something like the Pennsylvania Amish would make
He liked it a great deal.
I then compared it to Commercial Made In USA MOTTs apple sauce. This was very sweet, processed and artificial tasting in comparison to the Russian IRP version.
(We use to much sugar in the USA)
As for field use, my opinion the container is too fragile. It can break the seal very easy. Packing this version would be a problem in a Hiking rucksack or Canoe bag.
Be careful if you do and place it inside something else into protect the tin from being crushed
Other uses
You could spread this on sweet biscuits, Crackers, or a chocolate bar and it would be like desert. It would also work with any US MRE cake desert as a topping or just mixed in.
Or if you had some time you could make an alcoholic beverage out of this on short order. It was done by US forces on Guadalcanal 1942. Apple Sauce, Fruit cocktail and bread were used to make crude hard Cider. This in primitive conditions and no brewing equipment
Later I will eat the other components and review. On a general note, so far I have found the Russian items seem to have far less artificial taste and lean more to the salt and pepper or in the case nature's flavor by itself. This is refreshing at times I grow weary of strange factory flavors. Sometimes things are better in their natural juices

Re: IRP Applesauce
Good review Norton. I like the more natural, milder favors as well it seems like so many American food products are sickingly sweet. I've only had one IRP, but was very pleased with it. I really liked the fruit beverage powder. It's crisp and light, but not overly sweet like the US beverage powders, of which many taste like "Kool-Aid". It's been my favorite ration beverage powder that I've tried thus far. I too liked the applesauce in the IRP, as well as the jam, which was a better consistency than the MRE jam (not watery), and with a good flavor. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the rest of the ration.
