Croatian canned meat

Post by Norton » Thu Mar 05, 2015 9:34 pm

A few minutes for old fashion civilian ready to eat canned meals
Always search the International markets for caned entrees so I can make my own homemade C rations type meals
I found this Podravka brand Croatian canned Beef Goulash at the market.
(Store clerk asked me if I was Croatian)
Wanted to use this for a winter camping trip combined with MRE rice as a nighttime meal.

I was very pleasantly surprised with the high quality of the beef cuts and flavor of the sauce.
It had about 12 one inch size cuts of lean beef in a tomato base red sauce.
The sauce had what seemed to be allot of paprika and the beef cuts were nice and tender.
Not chewy, stringy or tough

Took at the old Swedish mess kit melted some snow Cooked it in the can by setting the can in water and slowly boiling it.
The I ate the meat on tortillas cooked in the top half of the mess kit. I think this would be a great entree to combine with rice, potatoes or pasta.
But what it really needed was thick heavy rye bread. Then It would have been perfect for cold weather.
By the way the beverage in the aluminum can is American

I love the pics. Some people I know are preparing for hard times ahead, but refuse to go out if it is cold and snowy, much less camping in it.
Personally, I love cold weather, but hates a hot summer day. Cooking a meal outside is a fun thing to do, even in the snow.
