Free Summer Meals Program Begins

On July 2 the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and New York City Department of Education announced that the Summer Meals Program will run until August 28. The Summer Meals Program provides free breakfast and lunch to New York City students 18 and younger with the goal of "[reaching] the City's youngsters and [providing] them with nutritious meals as we do during the school year," according to Chief Executive of School Support Services Eric Goldstein.

There are no applications required for children to receive free meals, and children can receive free meals at any one of the 82 NYCHA sites throughout the five boroughs regardless of where he or she lives. The sites participating in the Summer Meals Program in Rockaway are:

Bayswater Park, Beach 32 Street and Dickens Ave. Runs through August 21, Tuesday-Friday. Breakfast is served and lunch is served from noon until 1:00 p.m.

Beach Channel High School, 100-00 Beach Channel Drive. Runs through August 21, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

NYCHA Carleton Manor, 71-15 Beach Channel Drive, NY 11434. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and lunch is served from noon until 1:00 p.m.

NYCHA Ocean Bay, 339 Beach 54 Street, NY 11692. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and lunch is served from noon until 1:00 p.m.

P.S. 105, 420 Beach 51 Street, NY 11691. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

P.S. 183, 245 Beach 79 Street, NY 11693. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

P.S. 253, 1307 Central Ave., NY 11694. Runs through August 28, Monday- Friday. Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

P.S. 43, 160 Beach 29 Street at Seagirt, NY 11691. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

Queens Library—Arverne, 312 Beach 54 Street, NY 11692. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served and lunch is served from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Queens Library—Far Rockaway, 1637 Central Ave., NY 11691. Runs through August 28, Monday-Friday. Breakfast is served and lunch is served from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

That's a really good program. We have a similar program here is the Seattle-Tacoma area. I just wish this could catch on in some other parts of the US.

We have something similar here in the Oklahoma City Public Schools.They serve both breakfasts and lunches...
