2016 LRP Review: Menu No. 4 Turkey Tetrazzini

Post by SentientTootsieRoll » Thu Apr 13, 2017 8:28 pm

Hi all,

Here's another ration from my collection. This is a 2016 Food Packet: Long Range Patrol, menu no. 4 Turkey Tetrazzini. I had a 2013 MCW version of this one, and I really liked it so I was looking forward to having it again.

Let's take a look...
Beverage Powder Grape
Chocolate flavor First Strike bar
Irish Cream Cappuccino Powder
Vegetable Crackers (hurray!)
Chocolate Peanut Spread
Mountain House Military Turkey Tetrazzini freeze dried meal
Spoon
Standard LRP Accessory Packet (I didn't open this)

First off, everything was enjoyable about this meal. The turkey tetrazzini stands as one of my favorite freeze dried meal thus far! So much so that I decided to take a trip to a nearby sports store to pick some of the civilian versions of it for lunch. The crackers and chocolate peanut butter were amazing. I like the vegetable crackers because they have more of a flavor. The only con about them is that they break really easily so you're likely to leave a trail of crumbs behind. It's nothing that a vacuum cleaner can't solve. ;) The first strike bar was a great way to finish it all off combined with the grape drink.

So this is a pretty short review but hopefully it gave you an idea of what to expect if you have one of these meals. 5/5!

I have a Turkey Tetrazzini here i've yet to try. No idea what it's like, can you give any indication of what it tastes like/ anything it's similar to?

Hmm, it really reminds me of a turkey stuffing with gravy over it. The texture is a bit like and so is the taste. I'd say it's well worth trying, that is if you can get your hands on it. Even in the states, getting LRPs and MCWs can be a pain. I don't dare ask what's it's like across the pond. Otherwise, you may want to check around your area at sports stores for the civilian version of it.

Oddly enough, I got my MCW's from Delicious in Poland. Seemed strange to get MCW's sent to Canada from across "the pond". Haha

That is really interesting. Another odd thing I've noticed during my adventures on eBay is that you can buy MREs packed in 2016 easily, but they're mostly all from Europe. It's actually harder to get brand new US MREs from the very country they're produced in. I really wish I knew why that's the case. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this.

I have one of this menu sitting on a shelf waiting to be tried thanks to parafireboy, he sent me 6 different ones.
I can guarantee you it is MUCH more difficult to get the MCWs, LRPs and TOTMs over here. You see them in German eBay sometimes, for big prices, and I think delicious has got hold of them in Poland sometimes. Well MCWs anyway.

And yes I can get very fresh 2015 or 2016 production standard MREs here in Ireland (well sent to me from mainland Europe) and in fact since I started deliberately exploring various rations rather than just getting a few random UK and US rations from a military surplus shop on my trips to the UK the oldest MRE I have got has been a 2015 with a very late 2014 beverage powder and snack bread in it.

It's been interesting to see the US reviewers saying "we're starting to get the sleeve instead of the box" for the entrees for example.
Of course we have to pay a lot more for MREs here, making them a bit less desirable to me personally as camping/ survival/ emergency food and purely for fun as the so many of the European ones are in my opinion far superior in quality and often cheaper. Some of the MREs are tasty though and I do like to get them just for fun.

I'm a fan of the freeze dried mains in the more specialised US rations though
