Looks like new FSR's are on the way!

Post by Dingleberry Johnston » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:09 pm

I came across this info recently...sorry if it's old news to everybody here.

Looks like they're currently testing/evaluating new First Strike Ration menus, which will be released soon. They're increasing from the current 3 menus to at least 9.

Here's the PDF files with the info...

Interesting to see that they are finally looking to adopt some sort of energy gel. Suppose it was just a matter of time.

I've used them for mountain biking for many years now. The only thing is that you are supposed to consume plenty of water with it.

Does anyone have any photos of the new MORE ration pack?

I was looking over some Natick Labs reports last night for FSR's and saw that the MORE ration packs were only prototype(s), even though they have an NSN assigned to them and they should be out already if the production was transfered to DSCP in 2010. If I am reading that report correctly. I only have one picture from the PPT slideshow and it doesn't show too much so if there is anybody that can find me another photo(s) out there in cyberland I would appreciate it. :D

Also does anybody know if these are supposed to supplement with MRE's or just be a stand alone pack (i.e. special purpose ration)?

Norge,

Can you repost the link only half of it came through,

Bypah,

It looks like, from what I am reading,is that the prototype are half MRE and half are civilian OTC foods. But the PPT notes are from 2010 so I can't be really certain if OTC cicilian foods were implemented in the final rations. This part is a little frustrating. And that is why I asked anybody if they had any current photos out there so I can compare them to the Natick Laboratory photos. :o

My question would be this:

How many total taxpaying resources were spent developing the current cold as well as 'warm' weather first strike rations in use currently...and why would simple 'supplements' to such (especially if produced outside the major MRE supply chain that helped develop/invest in the original)...take literally millions and untold time 'more' to implement?

In other words, was there truly a 'let down' in 21st centruy research competency and administrative approval not that very long ago...or were none of these 'new' products available anywhere in the world when the original FSRs were touted as the best combination(s) that America could possibly come up with for their respective applications?

I read on one of those articles that the Army is also going to be requesting that vendors improve the nutritional content of the MRE and FSR as well as the new UGR, lowering the sodium content, lowering the bad saturated fat content and removing totally trans-fats and improving protein content in some menu's. Most guys have easy access to energy type drinks anyways so they don't need all the sodium content in a MRE.... I think nutrition was terrible even when eating at the DEFAC on most posts and especially the ones in Iraq and Kuwait too many bad choices when you combine that with the MRE its much wonder we see soldiers that are overweight.
