Found this in a 2004 Meal Packet, Cold Weather. I had not scene anything like this before. They usually just stick the pack of candy into the MRE, whatever. I guess it's like a blanket, since all the items in the Meal, Cold Weather, are freeze-proof. Of course, they put 5 or 6 wrapped Walnetto's in a tan foil bag, and call it "Toffee with Walnuts", but this is different. It's a bag, in a bag. Know what i mean/

never had a MCW but I've already found some M&M's and Skeetles in that kind of double pack in regular MRE's (2003?)

I recon it's a extra piece of isolation indeed (choclate will lose alot off it's taste when it's frozen a couple of times..) but I can't really see the use of it.. Because I think it'll only help for a short period off time.. and not if your carrying it around in your backpack for a longer time (like a complete day or let's say a week)

If I'm not mistaken they are regular M&M 's....
Simple, buy a bag and freeze them, they taste good cold.

Many civilian MRE item´s are coming in an extra pouch (tootsie rools, peanut butter crackers, short bread...) but you are right, the skittles and M&M were never in extra pouches (I guess).


It´s not for isolation as mentoined for sure. Why? Rations are stored for years, they will adapt to the outside temperature anyway and that little sheet of plastic layer would protect it from getting cold...

I have some of those tootsie rools packages from the regular MRE's they come in a tan wrap...

I don't really think it will matter much (white or darkbrown) but arctic rations are also not really ment to store at arctic temperatures (The Dutch ROEK is to be stored at a maximum of -18*C) after that the food is still edible offcourse, but they just garranty it up to -18.

Choclate has the bad habbit to loose taste if you freeze and defrost it a couple of times. It's very easy to try this at home, 1 time won't really make a noticable difference, but it might be some sort of isolation..

If it would be a piece of camo, they probably would just've put it in a thin, lightweight plastic bag instead of a relatively heavy aluminium wrap. But I have to agree, if the ration would stay in the arctic climate for more then half a day, it'll just be useless as isolation..

I don't really know if choclate can withstand "fast" temperature changes.. Isolation can also be used to "smooth" out temperature changes..

The M&Ms are in a plastic bag, where do you see heavy alu wrap?!

housil, the interior of those MCW's wraps is lined with aluminun foil.
