1977 Escalloped Potatoes with Pork Food Packet Long Range Patrol Review

For breakfast, I wanted to try another LRP I'd not had before. This is an Escalloped Potatoes with Pork LRP produced in 1977 by the Island Supply Corporation. In addition to never trying the LRP version of this menu, I've never had this dish in real life either so this will be an entirely new experience in that regard as well!

Here's what the front and back of the ration looked like prior to opening it.

Here was the inside of the bag prior to removing the contents from it.

And here are the items nicely laid out on the tray. This ration includes Pork with Escalloped Potatoes, toilet paper, spoon, a sleeve to prevent the meal from being damaged and an accessory packet.

The accessory packet includes cocoa beverage powder, "candy, chocolate disk with toffee, enriched, sweet", two coffee packets, creamer, sugar and matches. On the accessory packet, it said it would include "fruitcake bars" but this one didn't include those. I wonder if the packer didn't have any available.

Here's what the escalloped potatoes with pork looked like in its packaging prior to adding any water.

I added boiling water to it and let it set for 5 minutes. In the meantime, I combined the cocoa, sugar, coffees and creamer together to make a super tasty mocha.

And here's the entirety of the ration prepared!

Wow, this is an odd looking one. It really didn't smell like much so I took a small bite and nothing tasted off about it so I took some bigger bites. There really wasn't much in the way of flavor. It was filling but it had that strong, chemical Mountain House flavor some of you may be familiar with. While eating it, I decided to look up what goes into making this menu and learned that butter was one of the main ingredients. My guess is that's what gave it a yellow color but I couldn't really taste butter or even pork for that matter. I wish I had a more descript and creative way to describe the flavor but I really can't, mostly because it simply didn't have much.

The chocolate toffee bars were pretty tasty. If you've had a toffee Symphony bar, it's like that but maybe half the level of quality. The mocha was a great way to finish this ration off. It's well known around these parts that US ration cocoa is second to none when it comes to hot cocoa.
