1977 Beef with Rice Food Packet Long Range Patrol Review

A few days ago I decided to dig into a Beef with Rice LRP produced in 1977 by Island Supply Corporation. This is yet another freeze dried meal I have not had before so I looked forward to it!

Here's a look at the front and back of the ration, prior to opening.

Here are the components of the ration laid out on the tray. It includes an accessory packet, freeze dried beef with rice, toilet paper, spoon and a sleeve to protect the freeze dried meal from being compromised.

I opened up the accessory packet and it includes cocoa beverage powder, type III fruit flavored corn flake bar class 3 lemon flavor, two coffees, creamer, sugar and matches. In a previous review, I was concerned that I'd never have a chance to consume another one of these rare cereal bars again. Looks like I have another opportunity!

I decided to prepare an Army mocha by mixing the cocoa with the two coffees, sugar and creamer.

Here's what the beef with rice looked like in its packaging prior to adding any water.

And here's the entirety of the ration, prepared and ready to eat!

It's exciting to witness a meal being nearly twice my age still being edible. I added a little more water than usual to the beef with rice. It really tasted just like it sounds, but with that processed Mountain House-like flavor some us may be familiar with. The rice hydrated nicely and was somewhat chewy along with the beef. The consistency and flavor was like a Hamburger Helper meal with beef gravy added. All in all, it wasn't the most exciting meal but it was certainly palatable.

The lemon bar was starting to spoil but it still had enough flavor that it was tasty enough. The texture reminded me of taking finely crushed rice kripsies, adding lots of granulated sugar and maybe a few lemon flavored Skittles and grinding it up into a bar. I really enjoyed it. I wonder how many other flavors they made.

Unlike many of the other LRPs from the same case, the creamer actually held up in this ration so I was able to create a true Army mocha. It was a very desirable way to finish off this ration.
