Food Packet, Survival, Abandon Ship
Re: Food Packet, Survival, Abandon Ship
Man, it seems like every time I come back to check up on what's been posted, you somehow find something twice as rare as the last thing you reviewed
Keep it up! This is intense.

The best possible MRE: 1lb bag of Jalapeño cheese spread.

I agree - this is great! Thanks again Steve1989 for taking the time to share all of these with us. It helps catalog each little chunk of ration history in a way that gets more and more people interested over time. Thanks to everyone on here for reviewing, commenting, speculating, etc - it's all important.cutsman wrote:Man, it seems like every time I come back to check up on what's been posted, you somehow find something twice as rare as the last thing you reviewedKeep it up! Re: Food Packet, Survival, Abandon Ship
Here is a small picture update on the Food Packet, Survival, Abandon Ship and 2 other versions of this Ration other than the 2 I originally photographed.
I just picked up 2 of these FPSAS's in this foil packaging recently and am keeping them sealed because there are some pics here of someone that opened one.

A review of a whole case of these Food Packet Survival Abandon Ships.
Just did a video review of this - going to review the one from 1973 next! Also providing photos for the forums here!
Gotta get to bed now though!

Backing up to the cigarette posts earlier in the thread.
Somewhere about I believe that I have the lead-foil Lucky Strike packaging from a WWII 20-pack. My pater kept it as a souvenir of his time as a USN nav/weather officer, either on the Iceland convoys or later, the SoPac.
I've been going through some old family "archives" and it might just surface. Seems like it was always just loose in some old photo album... and we're Yankees.
NOTHING get thrown out.

Hey rattatoo, that is fascinating stuff right there! If you ever find that cigarette packaging, please share a picture!
I hear ya, I never throw any Ration packaging out of it is something rare & interesting. Actually, I have a hard time even throwing out standard MRE pouches because of all the practical uses!
Folks, I just uploaded a review of a WHOLE CASE of 1973 DoP Food packet, Survival, Abandon Ship on Youtube and here is the link if you wanna check it out!
I even smoke a 42 year old Pall Mall. I must be crazy.

As I'm catching up on older post, my apologies for very late response/questions... this one is for steve1989 since I've witness his rare smokes... why were cigarettes a mainstay in the early days of survival rations?.. very historical/interesting thread, thanks.

Re: Food Packet, Survival, Abandon Ship
I would say they would be included in survival rations simply as a morale boost. Psychological health is amazingly important during situations where you have to abandon ship or crash in a plane or any situation like that. Add to that the fact that they are a mild stimulant and that once lit they will stay lit a lot longer than a match and will be much more wind-proof would be a plus as well I would think.alohakid wrote:steve1989 wrote:Hey rattatoo, that is fascinating stuff right there!
