Not sure what I would do about the cardboard. I'm thinking by placing everything in a gallon ziplock and then vacuum packing, it would be a tidy package. I can easily print up a cardstock "label" and place inside the bag. Even include contents. Pondered including a beverage bag/heater for coffee... Both of which I have...

Hannonmc,

Okay here's an idea I thought of today on the plastic wrapping. If you go back a couple of posts you see the FSR prototype. It's looks like a shrink wrapped "brick". I think you could assemble everything, kind of layer it on thin plastic and then heat wrap it. Kind of like what they do to meat trays at a local supermarket for fish, seafood, and meat. I know how they do it, I mean I worked in a meat packaging plant for awhile and the heat/shrink wrap would be very close to that photo. Not to mention it would be water tight and compact much to what were looking for.

Sounds like it might work.

I have one of those food savers. It sucks the air right out and seals it airtight as well. I wanted to include a ziplock back for parity with the FSR. Once the bag is open, you want some way of keeping the items together.

It looks to me like the FSR prototype cardboard is no thicker than a 6 pack carrier type material, and making one should be fairly simple.

Does anyone have the dimensions for a FSR still in packaging? Weight?

I knew I saw pics of a newer FSR out there. They aren't using any cardboard at all:

Also a good overview by Britman:

I just checked a couple I have here. The weigh might vary from FSR to FSR by a few ounces and the packaging size varies depending on how much you stretch out of bag. But more or less, here are the dimensions:

Weight: 45 ounces
Dimensions: 10" x 6" x 4" (for a well-compressed FSR)

Another FSR I measured was more like 11" x 7" x 3.5"

Kman,

Yeah I measured one I had last night and my dimensions came out to a 10 x 7 x 4 inches for a bagged but loose FSR. Mine didn't come with a brown inner bag but just all the components thrown into mine so there is a lot of dead air space in it.

Between myself and Hannonmc we're hoping to come up with something similar that takes the dead air out of the bag. When were done we hope to have something we here on the forum can present to theepicenter to see if they'll make a civialin version for us. Seeing as how there is an unprescendented demand for it here.

As to the carboard protective sleeve in the earlier photos, that is a mystery to me on how to acquire a outer sleeve or frame with regards to the odd sizes of the components. Again and Hannonmc and I are thinking about some ideas tha are plausible with ordinary household items. So we'll see what we can come up with.

Oh HELL NO!

I think we can come up with something faster than that! Besides that was dated June 24 and this is September. So there's no telling if this out on the market or in distribution! Not only that but I have 80% of that in my stocks and I got it for free.

Okay guys, the challenge is on! I think we can beat these guys or whomever this person is to the punch. Whatda say? :D

Seems like we've hit a snag with The Epicenter.

Below is the email from them... But, on the upside, we are talking about getting a discount for the items they do carry, so we can pack our own... Much like the route treesuit and I are attempting.
sorry for the delay getting back to you.

I'm not sure if it's practical to pack these. Many of the items we do have,
some we don't and don't have a source for. Those include:
ERGO
First Strike Bar
Desert Bar
CHO Applesauce (we do have Carbohydrate Enhanced applesauce in MRE side
dish form)
Caffeine gum
Beef Jerky
Packet tuna
Packet Mayo

I realize commercial items could be used for these, but by the time we buy
small numbers of these retail at Walmart or where ever, the costs might not
make sense.

I'm not sure what could be done about the Mayo. We have had MRE mayo in the
past but I haven't been able to get any for a year or so. According to
Heinz Corp, the shelf life of commercial Mayonnaise in pouches is 8 months.
And they could be several months old when we purchase them. We can get
those at a food service company down the road, but they are in cases of 500
and that doesn't leave much time to go through them or for the end user to
use them.

We also have set up time involved in getting our "production" line
configured - making room for and setting up the conveyors, strapping
machine filling pick bins with the items and such. We do pack our own MRE
breakfast cases but because of set up and tear down time we try to pack 1/2
to 1 full pallet at a time (about 300 - 600 meals).

I'm starting to think we should work up some kind of discount code that
could apply to the components you and the forum folk would want to buy, and
for people to make their own using zip lock bags or a "food saver". Some of
the items we sell in singles, but some items we pre-pack in 12 packs (like
crackers, peanut butter ect). So, that might only make sense of a guy wants
to make 12 meals at a time.

Thoughts?

Bryan
