MCW entrée SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH HAM, PEPPERS & CHEESE

Post by mreheater72 » Sat Feb 15, 2014 3:55 pm

Hi guys,

yesterday at work I had for lunch the MEAL COLD WEATHER entrée WESTERN-STYLE SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH HAM, PEPPERS & CHEESE manufactured by OREGON FREEZE DRY, INC. packed April 19, 2012.

According to the instructions 8 ounces (about 270 ml) of water should be added. Based on my "experience” when preparing freeze dried food in the past that they need less water than recommended, I added only 250 ml. Ok, see the pics now :) :

Closed pouch and also opened pouch with printings

After waiting 10 minutes: Reconstituted WESTERN-STYLE SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH HAM, PEPPERS & CHEESE

Although I used less water than recommended, a large amount was not absorbed. I guess 220 ml would be enough (!?)

The taste: It was ok, but not great. I egg taste was not very strong, also the texture was odd. The ham tasted well, also the peppers. I seasoned it with some additional black pepper. Usually freeze dried entrees are very fine, that as I mentioned was in my opinion only ok.

I had one of these a few months ago..I drained mine and then threw it in a skillet to get rid of any excess moisture. Rather salty to me, but it was ok..

Hi MREheater,

thank you for the nice review.
One remark, isn't it from a LRP, since tha package is tan, colourwise. The MCW's are white not?

Allthough I don't have any newer LRP's myself, I should open up an MCW to check actually. I know the RCW's are packed in white.

First of all, I like the freeze dried stuff.

Pity that eggs were just "OK" as Mountain House also make these:

And they are great!

That is a good idea :) ! When I eat those eggs for the next time, I will also drain them before pouring on a plate…

I have a couple of MCWs with Inspection Date 05/2015 or 06/2016 with entrees in tan pouches :!: , for whatever reason, but the foil of all the other stuff is white as usual for MCW.

It looks like you added too much water to it.
I have several of those and the MH ones and I always use a little less water than the one indicated and they always come out fine.

As mreheater said, the current are tan:

The white one´s were in a RCW, the MCW have obviousley the entrees from the Long Range Patrol:

Hello Housil,

Thank you for the information and visual support ;)

Cool, I didn't know, nor had I seen it before, The tan pouches in the MCW's. Interesting....

My case of MCWs from 2005 all have white contents in the white bag - I'm wondering when they started including the tan pouches instead of separately making the white/tan packs.

Yes, would be interesting to know when that first occured and if it's a 'standard' thing.

I opened up two MCW's (4056 and 4059) and all 'white content'.
