2001 Beef with Mushrooms MRE Review

Here's yet another MRE from the closet. Today I wanted to try Beef with Mushrooms. This is another menu that was phased out for whatever reason or another. Let's take a look!
This one had some good items in it, but overall it was nothing too terribly exciting. The main was a bit sour and I could tell it was starting to go bad, so I didn't finish it. The smell was similar to mushroom soup. Nothing about how it smelled or the way it looked suggested that it was spoiled. The rice was pretty tasty! It was perfectly chewy, seasoned and even had bits of green peas in it! The crackers identical to the same MRE crackers you'd find in a current MRE, and they tasted fine as usual. I love blackberry jam, so naturally I was happy with that. The oatmeal cookies were also perfectly tasty. One oddity is that they gave you two smaller cookies as opposed to one large one like they do today. The amount of calories has remained about the same. I had to use my coffee cup for the cocoa hence why I had to take a separate photo to show it.
The cocoa from this time period really wasn't that good. I also had some from a few 2004 MCWs and it was seriously lacking on flavor, yet somehow managed to contain more calories than the current production cocoa. The cocoa from the 1980s, early 1990s and today are spot on in terms of flavor. I'm glad they didn't keep this recipe around.
I opened the Taster's Choice coffee and it was unfortunately crystallized.
