Yes! Four Fingers of Death!

Post by JT1991 » Wed Oct 18, 2017 9:46 pm

Greetings everyone,

I finally got my hands on the MRE Menu #6 FRANKFURTERS! AKA "The Four Fingers of Death"

Bought it on eBay for a great price of $15! Anyway, Lets get started shall we.
I won't be taste testing these right now as I would like to keep them for display purposes. This MRE is from the good ol' year of 1982. Packed by Southern Pkg. and Storage Co., INC South Carolina, USA

I'm always a little nervous purchasing MREs from eBay because I don't know how it has been stored. I'm afraid I will open it and something inside will have exploded.
Upon opening it, I was pleased to see that nothing had exploded or leaked. A smell test confirmed no foulness. Just a smell of classic MRE plastic. Everything inside was perfect. This is going to be a good MRE! The Accessory Packet is a different story.

As I cut open the accessory packet, something was compromised. Everything inside was covered with a white, greasy, waxy substance. What could this be? The first thing thing I took out was a chocolate fudge bar. Lo and behold that's what went bad. The fat and oils from the fudge bar had leaked out of a small hole and covered most of the contents. Of course the fudge had that foul signature milky chocolate smell. Not a very strong scent but still pretty unpleasant. Surprisingly, the chocolate fudge wrapper was in decent condition aside from the tiny hole, The sugar and salt packets, along with the toilet tissue had absorbed a lot of the moisture. The smell of the chocolate did it's job and permeated them as well. I'll let them air dry for a couple day and see if the smell dies down. The coffee, cream substitute and catsup packets were fine. After a wipe down with a damp cloth, all was good.

So concludes this MRE review. Have a great day everybody and take care.

I wouldn't bet too much on the hot dogs still being good but stranger things have happened. The beans are probably still okay. I know beans and tomato sauce is more of a British thing, but I'm a fan of then, even more so than standard barbecue beans. I had some from a 1987 MRE and it was probably the most tasty part of the whole ration!

I'll be darned to hear that the catsup was still good! I've had about two or three of those and they were all solidified. I'm wondering if the wax actually helped preserve it. If so, that was purely luck of the draw! Good find!

Those were top 3 MRE meal's in mid-late '80's, especially if in FRG. German country folk would give me DM 20 for 1 pack of MRE frankfurters. I liked them myself, on a MRE cracker. 8)
After the Chicken and the Egg, came the "Omelet"!
