2007 Pork Rib age test

Post by housil » Fri Mar 31, 2017 2:38 pm

Today I opened a 2007 #2 Pork Rib
PR1.jpg
I started with the cheese and crackers (out of another 2007 one)
PR2.jpg
10 years old cheese? Great as on it´s first day. No "weird" taste nor haptic, same with the crackers
PR3.jpg
Now I prepared the entree and as I don´t like the clam chowder, I replaced it with corn bread stuffing.
As I wanted to figure out, how good 10 years old FRH still work, I used one "plain", the other one I "tuned" with the salt from the accessory pack
PR4.jpg
Now "cook" them for 10 min.
PR5.jpg
The pork rib reached 125F (51°C)
PR6.jpg
The corn bread stuffing with the salted water "just" 118F (48°C)
PR7.jpg
So no evidence that salt will boost a weak FRH

Dessert I opened a 2005 spiced apples
PR8.jpg
No sign of age nor any bad taste even after 12 years of storage
PR9.jpg
I had a great, 10 - 12 years old dinner what I really enjoyed
PR10.jpg
also the cake :D

Very nice review, thanks for sharing! Been working my way thru a 2001 case, with similar results
it is what it is....

I like the quantitative nature of the FRH experiment. Interesting, repeatable results ?

I think you'd need to do a test with 2 FRH's of the same approximate vintage, one with salt and one without. But, maybe I'm overthinking it.

Sry for not extra to mention that - I did.

Bot FRHs were out from the same case and had the same age. I opened another MRE and took the FRH out.

Wow, for being a decade old, those crackers and the cheese spread were in remarkable condition. Clearly was a well-stored ration, there. I find it a bit surprising that the cheese spread didn't go funky, since I hear it doesn't hold up all that well.

I have an own rations cellar where I store all my rations in a dark, all year temp ~15-18°C (60-65F). So 10 years of storage is no problem for MREs.

Does the almight pork rib ever really die??

:)

Thanks for the review!

I had a 2007 Sopakco pork rib last week, purchased at a gun show recently so the storage history is unknown. And it was every bit as delicious as yours was!!
