Menu No. 4 Omelet with Ham 1993! FULL REVIEW WITH PICTURES!!

Post by Cmcilm94 » Thu Oct 22, 2015 12:48 am

Howdy! My fellow mreinfoers... Yeah let's go with that! Craig here returning to you with my 2nd full U.S. MRE review! And Ofcourse I have my fellow taste testing assistant ace right beside me. Today I'll be reviewing Menu No. 4 omelet with ham from 1993! Let me tell you... This was a very interesting review. I think you'll enjoy it! So what are we waiting for? LETS DO THIS!

Here's an outside view of the bag, unopened. It was in good shape. No rips or holes!
Upon opening the bag it had a distinct smell of plastic with a lingering hint of basement dust. Perfect! Weirdly spicy... Oh no
This bag was terrible to open, the tear notch was basically never cut all the way through. But that will never stop me! I WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED BY AN MRE BAG!

Meal unopened
Here's a picture of the contents of the menu.

Contents
Contents and dates are as follows:
Omelet with Ham: 3025

Potatoes Au Gratin: 3047

Crackers: 3075

Oatmeal Cookie Bar: 3074

Cocoa Beverage Powder: 3019

Mars Solid Milk Chocolate Bar: No date Mark; undetermined

Sugar Free Diet Soft Drink Mix Fruit Punch: 3091

Grape Jelly: 2350

Accessory Packet: 3082

Let's open the accessory packet! As I tore open the Accessory packet I immediately noticed an off spicy smell and I instantly thought "AWOL Tabasco" but to my surprise the bottle had its full contents and wasn't empty at all and everything else held up very well including the gum. (Note: I decided to try a piece after this review and let me just take a second to REALLY ADVISE AGAINST THAT IF YOU LIKE HAVING TEETH!)

Let's take a look at the crackers, upon the first pull of the notch I did determine that these crackers did hold a very good vacuum over all these years! *Hisssssss* and the entire room was taken over by the prominent scent of fresh cardboard:D After a corner bite I found the crackers to be crispy, tasty and fresh... Ace went ahead and agreed with me on that one. Tail wagging an all!

Let's try the crackers with some GOVERNMENT JELLY!!! Surprisingly it wasn't watery at all, I actually gave it a good kneed before opening the package and it came out looking like fresh jelly. It kinda smelled completely nothing like jelly, more or less like plastic petroleum products but hey! You're in the army now, eat your chow! The jelly was nice and sweet, it tasted as it should. MOVING ON!
image.jpeg
You jelly?
Time to plate up the main course and side! Below you can see a picture of the potatoes and for some reason they appeared to have hard water marks and dust on the packaging... Odd.
image.jpeg
First thoughts... WHY WAS THERE SO MUCH LIQUID!!?!?!? Surprisingly the omelet smelled of smoked ham... It was actually pleasant to be honest. Besides the issue of both the entree and side being the exact same hue of mustard gas shit yellow it actually appeared to look pretty good.

TASTE TEST TIME!!
Well, what can I say... As I'm stared down by a 22 year old plate of glorified cat food I'm not going to lie I was slightly intimidated. But I know what has to be done! I built up the necessary testicular fortitude and I took a small bite and put it in my mouth... Whoa... Okay... Yep, I'm still here! Surprisingly it didn't taste as bad as I'm building it up to be, it was just a very familiar taste, the ham was like any other ham from this period and the omelet did remind me of the newer cheese and veggie loaf style omelet. I thought "okay, not so bad" so I tried the potatoes and I'm not going to lie they weren't spoiled, BUT I HATED IT! NO GO FROM THE GET GO! UNDERSTAND ME HOOAH?
It was just so bland and the texture is just how you'd imagine 22 year old potatoes would taste after sitting in a retort pouch and varying temperatures.

And finally let's see how the desserts held up, first I'll start with the oatmeal cookie brick thing that I had to break apart with an air hammer. It was super dry so it tasted fine, but damn was it rock hard!

OATMEAL
I was greeted by the familiar sight of oxidized chocolate upon opening the Mars chocolate bar... Definitely not the worst I've seen and it had such a strong scent of chocolate even when it was sealed! So that was cool, after a bite I confirmed that besides the oxidation it tasted fine! Very sweet and just like... Chocolate, there's no other way to explain it haha!

Overview time!!!!
Now we all know how far U.S. MRE's have come with R&D from their initial launch in the early 80's. From the days of freeze dried beef patties(I have one in the collection actually) to the current rumors of an actual possibility of shelf stable pizza being on the ration menu for soldiers in the near future I feel as if we have come a very long way! Although that doesn't mean there weren't any hiccups along the way. I believe this specific menu was one of those hiccups, and even after trying to bring it back to life in 2005 the MRE omelet's have never been a hit. This specific meal dos stand the test of time wonderfully! But I can tell you what, if I was at the range all day and I got one of these thrown to me id probably skip the entree and just eat the side contents. That being said everyone I'm going to have to give this menu a NO GO... But maybe I'm being too harsh, I guessing if we're talking about how well the menu and its contents held up I would have to give it a GO... But only if it has a medical waiver and doesn't have any tattoos.

And now it's time to end. Thank you for reading everyone and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed reviewing it. Please keep an eye out for upcoming reviews as they will be coming within time.

Stay hungry!

I HAVE EXTRAS!
Damn 10 picture cap

Here's a closeup of the potatoes and a cross section of the omelet (notice that spam... I MEAN HAM!)

Check out the weird amount of liquid dripping from both of the dishes!

And lastly guys... Upon further examination. I've determined that this FRH is no longer operable and looks as if it would be better off being used as a soup sandwich rather than a heater.

Thank you for the great and entertaining review :P

If I remember right, that potato au gratin had an "odd" taste?

"... more or less like plastic petroleum products but hey..." I may had tried to light it, but not to eat it

Cool review! This meal was one of my favorites back in the day. Actually, one of the older metal canned T-Rations, had like 6 pounds of this concoction in it too.

The "newer" type omelet was just nasty though and tasted like crap!

Also I do remember that the potato's au gratin has a weird taste even when relatively new, so I cannot imagine what they tasted like now....

Very good review, one of the best :D :D

I see the crackers held up well after all these years. They knew how to pack them.
The omelet looks much like the old Ham/Turkey loaf from the mid 1980's
The oatmeal bar looks like a compressed life boat ration. To me sitting here it looked like a new bar.
The Mars Bar did not look to good.
The Jelly's I have seen from late 80's early 90's have began to to turn to sugar. Was your gritty in any way?
I am glad you posted and see you have a iron stomach!.

Oh man, this instantly goes down as one of the great classic MREinfo reviews!! Awesome!

What bravery - I am not even sure if I could have managed to achieve that kindof boldness on taste testing! A 22 & 1/2 year old omelet and it looked to be in pretty good shape! That liquid was probably just filled with extra nitrites and helped keep it from getting dry over long-term storage.
I think the oldie MRE's from 1995 & prior had more preservatives and ingredients that would sometimes last longer than the stuff now.

Mars bar looked like it was a neat try - Oldest chocolate I ever ate was from an SA-3 from 1951 and it tasted like dry bland hot cocoa powder that turned slightly solid over the years.. hehe!

The Oatmeal blocks usually last forever - I have had a couple that tasted pretty dry & hard like yours and some that were almost oily & crumbly.. just depends on it's storage I guess!

I never liked the Potatoes Au Rotten! Stuff woulda been better off used at a deterrent - or make a POW talk by eating a few spoonfuls! The water marks are strange - I wonder if they were washed before packing in the carboard or something.. kinda odd I would love to see how these things are made!

I have had Chiclets from the 60's, 70s, & 80's and sometimes they're rock hard - sometimes they're perfectly fresh just depends - I just had some from 1980 recently and they were perfect!

The Crackers look good - sometimes they spoil and get a metallic or bleach odor and smell.. oooh man that is an unpleasant smell!

I cannot wait to see what you & Ace have up for your next review! Awesome choices! :D

Thank you for the awesome review!

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable Sunday. First off I would just like to say thank you for all of the positive feedback on this review so far!
Too answer a few questions; Yes, the potatoes au gratin did have an "odd" taste, it was just something off putting and very unappetizing.
And surprisingly my jelly was simply still... Jelly. It wasn't gritty at all and it was still very stiff and wasn't runny at all. Which is very uncommon because I've seen jelly from 2005 Come out like water haha!

Alright everyone, I'm going to let the poll run for a little bit longer before I do the review that wins.

Keep an eye out! There is a lot of new things in the making and on their way:)

Have a wonderful Sunday everyone!

Stay hungry!

Good old days :-)
The first MREs in my life were those dark brown "bricks" from 1993. I still have one cheese spread from '93.
I had Escalloped Potatoes,Corned Beef Hash,Spaghetti,Ham Slice,Beef Frankfurters and Beef Stew. The Ham Slice entree was the only one I didn't like.
One guy is selling dark brown MREs for 2.7EUR (2.97USD). He's got 5. I would buy them just for fun but I rather spend my money on fresh MREs...
I think I'm addicted :-)
Am I the only one?
