2006 fruit bar/ Wheat Snack bread

I took an unplanned canoe trip on the Shenandoah river yesterday. So for lunch rather than have wife make me sandwich, I looked into the MREs and grabbed some suitable items. Snack Bread Wheat, bacon cheese packet, some crackers and fruit bar for last.

This would be for a on the water meal eaten without stopping.
paddle take a bite paddle take a bite

I combined the bread with a single retort slice of SPAM and had a G.I. lunch. That had fresh biscuit taste and texture.
It went well with the SPAM. This combination would be fine for breakfast alone as I could hardly finish it is was so filling.

The Bread/ Crackers were 2006 and bacon cheese was 2010. Both tasted fine and went well with the SPAM as it was washed down with beer.

The 06 fruit bar looked suspect when I unwrapped it from it's Kellogg's looking commercial wrapper. The color looked too brown, I took a bite . It had a heavy dose of Cinnamon and lots of brown sugar, but tasted funny. So I did not eat it.
In fact I felt queasy thinking about it.

My thoughts on the bread was it is a great addition to the menu for Military, hikers, hunters, canoeist or people who want to eat bread on the go. I wish they had these in the 1980's it would have lent it self to the Ham/Turkey loaf better than crackers. and with Jam it would make a stand alone breakfast entree if you had hot coffee.
You could mash it up with fruit and it would again be better than the cracker mix
Combined with Civilian foil pouches Tuna, Salmon or chicken you would have a high calorie high protein lunch with plenty of starch carbohydrates from the thick Army bread. For hiking with a heavy pack. You don't eat big lunch, just protein and starch to keep your energy up. These would lend themselves to that task
In my humble opinion This is one of best things to happen to American Military rations for a long while.
Even eaten alone with a canteen of water it is a more satisfying item than crackers we have been issued since the 1917.
It stays soft in the middle and has enough salt and baking powder to keep the taste right.

Nicely done. I agree about the bread, and really wish they would include that instead of the ubiquitous crackers in the TOTM meals that I favor for my fishing trips.

I find the snack bread is only tolerable if it's covered in something (such as cheese) to mask the flavor, otherwise it tastes heavily of preservatives.

I've really been liking the newer two-slices snack bread - here's hoping those replace the crackers in general eventually. Each slice is half as thick as a normal one so it doesn't feel as dense either - win win.

I like the crackers, but I wish they were a bit sturdier,,,
Only so much you can do with a bag of crumbs.
