SW Beef and beans 2010 edition

Post by jwills » Mon Apr 15, 2013 6:35 pm

Had my first MRE in a long time. The last experience I had was in the mid 90s right after the first Iraq war with the US. My cousin had brought some back but I can't honestly remember what it was. Obviously he nuked it in the microwave so he could promptly show me "other" uses for the heater packs

If you saw my intro thread I recently got a sealed case of 2010 edition MREs. Decided I'd draw #s so I put 13-24 on 12 index cards and threw in a bowl. #15 was the first one so I fished it out and gave it a go.

Once a week Sunday I plan to draw another one for the next 11 Sundays. That way I can sample all 12 from this case and make a decision which I liked and which I'd avoid in the future.

Sorry didn't think to take photos so this will be my first and quick but pathetic review.

On with the show.

Tore open the bag. Kinda like christmas as I didn't know what to expect. Main entree obviously was the SW beef and beans. Pretty damn good. I cheated and just used the microwave. Hey I was impatient. I ate it as is, no spice, salt, etc... It could have used something probably but I'll be honest, I was exicted to tear into this thing and give it a go.

Next up, the mexican rice. Kinda bland, I dunno, it just didn't do alot for me. While edible I expected more flavor as well form this.

Ummmm, yummy cookies. What can I say. A classic. The cheese spread was well, cheese spread. Reminded me of Velveeta in a ketchup packet. The veggie crackers were good too. I could have spread the cheese on it I suppose but decided I'd eat all the components seperate and as is to get a base line for future MRE meals. Picante sauce again well was like picante sauce. After I tore the packet open and gave it a taste decided to save it for a rainy day. In the fridge it went and I'll make good use of it with some chips at a later date. Left the spice bag intact. Figured those might prove useful as well at a later date and if I really needed sugar, salt etc... I have it on hand in the kitchen already. All packed up like that would be great for camping and what not.

Finally, the Beverage mix. Honestly meal ready to eat is spot on, but the drink isn't ready to drink now is it? As long as you had water and more importantly clean water handy you are good to go there. If you didn't I guess you can do without but note to self, need to get some water purification tabs down the pipe in case I was to depend on these MREs in a bad situation. Fortunately I had plenty of tap water handy for the mix. Good stuff but not much of it though. Would be nice if they included a bigger packet or maybe two.

Sorry folks, not good at this review stuff and its an after sight. I'll enjoy the next one more prepared, take notes, photos etc... as I go.

Thanks for the read.

Thanks for the review - one question though: did you just eat the cheese spread on it's own? It's definitely not supposed to be a snack by itself and I'd imagine it'd be like eating a can of easy-cheese without any crackers or whatever. To each their own I suppose, but personally I'd probably find the cheese pretty gross without spreading it on something. Did you at least knead it for a while? It partially separates and gets rather unpalatable over the years and really needs to be kneaded before consuming.
