HAM GRENADES

Post by mreheater72 » Thu Dec 15, 2011 5:05 pm

Hi guys,

after a long delay I´m back with a interesting recipe :D ! As nearly always I took it out of "THE UNOFFICIAL MRE RECIPE BOOKLET" by TABASCO dated 1985. It is based on early MRE Menu No. 11 "HAM SLICES" and it is called "HAM GRENADES". See the following pictures:

Vintage CRACKERS packed by AMERICAN POUCH FOOD INC. (about 1981)

Vintage CATSUP, DEHYDRATED and first style MRE TABASCO bottle without thinner neck

The ingredients still in pouch I used for the recipe at one glance: Commercial supermarket ham, CRACKERS dated 1999 and no TABASCO and no CATSUP. The reason for that is: First the vintage MRE constituents are collectibles for me, second I don´t think that they were edible anymore (especially the ham), third I don´t like TABASCO (because of the vinegar in it) nor CATSUP

The loose ingredients [100 g of ham (should be the same as 120 g drained MRE ham) and half of the CRACKERS pouch]

I crumbled the CRACKERS in an usual plastic pouch

All in all the recipe is fine: The HAM GRENADES really taste awesome :D :D , even without TABASCO or/and CATSUP :!: . But it is a lot of work, hardly to do that in the field :!: !

Some suggestions to make it better: Use the entire CRACKERS instead of the half pouch and use more water, so I guess the patties get more sticky and better mixed and will not explode in the skillet during frying! Otherwise it could be better to crumble the ham instead of chopping it.

Taste it and enjoy it :) !

So long mreheater72

Soon I will show a "new" recipe here; but until now I´m not sure which :) !

Yes, the label on the beer bottle is upside down, I guess the brewery makes that for advertising purposes.

MREHeater72,

I tried the same receipe this evening and I used canola oil instead of butter. They turned out really awesome and I also used the slightly older jalepeno ketchup since I didn't have older dehydrated catsup. The jalepeno ketchup is very spicy in my mind.

Wow :o :o !! Those ones look really fine :D :D ! I see you made the patties more flat in comparison to mine and you have no problems with "exploding"! Thank you for the sharing the photo :D !

MREheater72,

Well, I still had a little problem with the "exploding" part. I did make the patties a bit bigger but the cook time was longer. Also I was surprised how they turned a nice brown color.

After seeing where you got the receipe, I went online to the Tabasco website and ordered a MRE receipe cookbook myself. It was only $16.00 USD and strangley it was not like yours. The receipes in my cookbook are all dated 2007 as to reflect the MRE's from time period. So incidently I didn't have a "Ham Grenades" in mine. But the style, characters, and small cartoon-ish icons are all the same.

For all of you wanting a MRE cookbook such as mine and MREHeater72's; Tabasco sells them for a small price and a ton of other really cool items from their store. :D

Treesuit, are the recipes of your Tabasco cookbook really dated 2007 :?: ?

I have two different issues: The first one is 1985, the second one is about 2001.

MREHeater72,

Yes, when I received my copy I immediately paged through it to find your receipe. I was stunned to find no such receipe in my cookbook until I went to the inside of the front cover and looked at the copyright date. Sure enough it was a 2007 printing.

This is my second MRE cookbook. The first was the Tabasco MCI cookbook that came out in 1966, and now this one. :)
