Chicken with Pasta in Pesto Sauce
When I chose another entrée this evening this one stood out as being a bit mysterious not only that I enjoyed the anticipation as it warmed up. Again, I did the boil in the bag on this meal and when opening up the top I got the rich aroma of pesto. Looking at the dish I noticed the pesto, chicken (pulled like pork, again) and some vegetables. Looked quite appetizing but soon as I started eating I noticed that this is kind of missing some flavor. The chicken, as we may know, is shredded and soft, standard fare for most MRE menus that have chicken. But this one had the meat with more firmness to it. The vegetables were few, though I did find some and I couldn’t taste them. The pasta is corkscrew which is a surprise in the MRE menu line in that I have never seen this pasta before in any MRE’s over 20 some years. These were very nice and cooked right.
Lastly the pesto sauce; I won’t say its overwhelming the taste buds or trying to overpower the meal but you can taste it and it won’t leave an after taste behind. I did have some yellow and wild rice pilaf with it and I can tell you the side dish had more taste the main entrée. I welcome this new meal and I think that it’s just like the buffalo chicken: a nice surprise for the MRE’s that are coming out but somewhere I think there is something missing that can be improved on. Definitely a “must buy” if you want to change your menu options.
