Beef Brisket review

Post by MR.EMAN » Tue Jun 16, 2009 4:13 pm

Had this one yesterday. When it comes to brisket, if yer like me, just the word alone conjures up smoky, BBQ, sliced beefy goodness. Needless to say, I had higher hopes for this, thinking it would be something it really wasn't. I had hopes of real, honest to goodness, smoked brisket in its natural juices. When I opened the pouch, what I saw resembled brisket, but not "Brisket"

Lotsa meat and gravy. Better get some WSB ready for sopping up that delicious gravy!

The meat is definitely brisket, and quite 'fall apart' tender, but what this entree is, is basically the pot roast entree without the veggies. Thats what came to mind while eating this. All aspirations aside, this was still pretty good, and will be ordered again.

It is interesting how one's perspective can influence one's expectations. For me, your images of the brisket entree is exactly as I would have envisioned it to be. Pretty much the same as what you would get from a canned "roast beef" product (I think Hereford is probably the most recognized brand for most folks.)

When I was a kid, the Hereford corned beef was too top o the line. We usually settled for the bottom shelf, can't even call it meat, so we'll call it Met stuff. It wasn't till I shopped for myself that I could get it at whim. Hereford corned beef with sliced canned potats, homemade hash, mmmm.. End hijack

Beef Brisket in gravy

This entrée looked very good on the Epicenter website so like the others I ordered I had an excuse to sample it tonight. Though Mr. Eman beat me to the punch, I’ll give me take on things. When I opened it up it looked like beef tips in gravy; kind of like what Hormel foods puts out in some of their self stable dishes. When opening the pouch I had the wiff of beef stock, and a thick gravy texture. Soon as I got into the meal, I was really pleased with the taste and consistency. I likened this to a roast beef supper with beef gravy that goes on mashed potatoes.

Then I though, this would be perfect if you heat up those MRE mashed potatoes that come with the meatloaf. I don’t think you would need any seasoning with this, there’s probably enough of it in the meal. For those of you out there contemplating getting this: DO IT! You won’t be disappointed and the amount the Epicenter charges is fair enough for this main meal. The only thing I had against it, and I think Mr. Eman hit on it, is the fact that when you think of brisket you think and see of a big slag of meat not thin sliced shaved meat. But still, I know for sure I’m going to get this one on the next run.
