Review: BBQ sauce and Ground Beef, Circa 1980's

Post by Garron » Wed Oct 22, 2008 11:25 am

Hey Guys,

Plucked up some more courage today and tested the BBQ sauce and Ground Beef,

Interesting thing is, under the paper label is the original stamp of Meat Balls with BBQ Sauce. Its quite old as it that menu was withdrawn in about 1987

I did the normal, sniff and little bit on the back of spoon, it was fine. So I chowed down, I guessed it was supposed to be put into bread as it was not somthing you would eat on its own... Sloppy Joe's I think they are called?

Tasted fine, not really the bbq sauce I was expecting was't really smokey like the very strong tomato and slightly spicy/peppery taste. I liked it  The beef was a little dry (what there was of it) not quite sure what ground beef is, we don't have it in the UK, I am guessing like minced beef?

But yeah in a sandwich it was great, filled me up; only downside there wasn't more I would love to have it again. I will keep and eye out on ebay for it.

nice review. ground beef is just beef put through a meat grinder. commonly used in the US to make hamburgers. also called ground chuck, hamburger. i will be putting another old review on this evening.

By the sound of its its pretty similar to minced beef,

Only thing I've noticed is I do have heartburn/acid indigenstion right now, probably due to the tomato based sauce, and the fact its 20 years old :D

It's all fun and games, until somebody pokes an eye out!

I hope you guys being are being careful eating this old stuff! I don't have anything older than 2004, and to think I was nervous about trying that.

Proceed with caution, gentlemen(and ladies if I missed any).

I am very careful, if it smells off or tasted not quite right... bitter, sharp, Sour, not the norm, I won't eat it, I taste a little on a spoon rinse my mouth then try it again, I also cook it for like 20 minutes at full boil to make sure. I dont just rip open the packet and start eating thats just foolish.

Thanks norge, I'm the same I think, it was a the tomato/bbq base that caused it with me, I had some ant-acids in my kit in the car (never know when they will come in handy :D )
Yay! so we have a badge or club emblem?

I still have chicken ala king left, but I will wait a few days to see how this MRE works out.

I guess it must be earlier than 1986, because 1986 they introduce the 8 oz pouch :)

I'll try and come up with something,

Theres 2 on the packet. They were est8890 and 4126AIJ, I dont know which one would be the date code. It was made by Shelfstable foods, Inc.

Would 4 mean 1984?

I guess 4126AIJ is the right code, yes it has to be from 1984!
