Hi guys,

today I had for supper the first time “Chili with Beans”, a main entree which appears for the first time in 2006 MREs. It was packed March 15 2007. Here some pictures:

I was a little bit hot, but very delicious. It will be one of my favourites in future!

So long mreheater72

"Hot" in the meaning of "makes thursty" (scharf)!

Hmm.. I'm glad I got to read that, I always thought it was heiss or schaff, not scharf. Thanks even though that wasn't the intention. :D

The better word in English for scharf would be "spicy" FWIW. It seems as if that means it has too much spice, but the vernacular has changed to make it mean make thirsty as opposed to burn your mouth with heat.

Right,
scharf with "r" = hot spiced (but a knife is scharf (= sharp) also)
heiß (or heiss) = hot in temperature

hehe :D yep made that mistake In Wien (Vienna).... asked for a Scharf Schokolade, instead of a Heiße Schokolade, I realised my mistake and then corrected myself, the waitress just laughed as i tried to explain,

Could have been worse I suppose, wasnt insulting, or crude.

One of the girls on the otherhand... whilst trying to say I am hot (Mir ist heiß) said Ich Bin heiß roughly meaning I am Horny, wouldn't have been so bad but were in a full yet quiet cafe, pretty much everyone stopped and looked, as which point I explained through hyterical fits of laughter, i never seen someone so embarased in my live.

She also said, Ich Bin Kalt... I am Frigid.... Should have been Mir Ist Kalt.
at this point she stuck to English, Don't blame her really :D

While not wanting to start any regional cuisine arguments, can any US members tell me if traditional Texas style chili should have beans in it or not? I always thought the answer was 'no'... but I am always willing to learn.

Traditionally, Texas chili does not have beans.

You must remember that beef is relatively cheap in Texas. Poorer people and those to whom beef is expensive use beans as an affordable filler.

I forgot to mention that Florida chili is made with alligator meat, swamp cabbage and datil peppers.
