In one of the do-it-yourself stores i am supervising i had a alarm call tonigth.

it was not possible do activate the alarm again, so i had to stay there the whole nigth with my German shepherd and my walther.

i was not prepared for staying there so long time, but for case of emergency i have always an MRE in my car.
So i decided at 3:30 am to open menu 18 Cajun Rice, Beans & Sausage. it was from 2004.

while heating up the main entree i have eaten the crackers with the cheese spread. the heater needed very long to heat up the entree, because whe have more than 4 week temperatures less than 32 F° . So the MRE in my car was very cold.
But it worked, and so i had time to eat the Cheddar Cheese Pretzels before eating the main entree.

everything was very delicious, it was my first time eating the cajun rice, not to spicy, perfect. also the pretzel tastet very fine, never had something like this before. i served the chocolate bar for later time, because i was very full.

i always have mre's in my car too.

i am always thinking of the night we stand in the falling snow on a german highway and no back and forward for hours... since this point prepared my car for being independent for 2 days with all you need.

call me crazy but this night was horror...

Heh, after MREs I'm all about preparedness.. it's expensive so far in my experience and I don't yet have everything I need, but better to be prepared.. I keep 3 MREs in my car which I rotate out every few months and a whole lot of other stuff too. Works for me. Fortunately haven't needed them so far.

I like the Cajun Rice entree too, it's very good (burp!).


And you guys are smart for having an emergency kit in your vehicle. Just do what BigMark does and rotate the food. Rotate water & batteries as well!

Nice story Rudi, you have made me curious, because I haven’t eaten the „Cajun-Style Rice with Beans and Beef Sausage”, yet, too. So I decided today to visit my basement and search for that entree to eat it for supper . Here are some photos (SOPAKCO, 4286):




I was surprised, so as jubifahrer mentioned, it tasted very delicious , perhaps a little too hot. It is certainly one of the better main entrees!

I store Accessory Packets in my car, only, but not whole MREs, because I think in summer it’s too hot (the temperature in the car goes certainly up to 50 degrees Celsius and higher (is about 120 Fahrenheit)) and in winter too cold (freezing...thawing...freezing...thawing etc.).

I keep whole MREs in my car and they're usually in there throughout the hot summers and cold winters. Last year, I noticed I had the same MREs in the car for the past three or four years so I figured I'd try one to see how it held up with all the wide temperature swings.

I can now say that it didn't really affect the MREs much - they tasted just fine and there weren't any problems with any of the components!

I live in the Arizona desert where our summertime temperatures are normally 105 to 115 degrees (you can just imagine what the temperature gets up to inside my truck ).

I rotate my (full bag) MREs out at the end of every year just to be on the safe side, but I have to say that so far there hasn't been any problem with them.

I've got to say that you fella's over in the EU really have some delicate stomachs.
I ate the Cajun Beans and Rice and they didn't have enough flavor for me.
I ended up adding a lot of Hot Sauce.

I like my food rather spicy..Ate too much bland food living at home.

Must be a German thing, here in the UK we love spicy food, I though cajun sausage&rice was mild, but then again us Brits are very familiar with Indian food so maybe thats why?

in France we have West Indies and North African food so we don't fear too much chili. I think the Germans didn't keep Togo long enough to appreciate hot food
