Today we gave the spaghetti with meat sauce a chance
A close up of the spaghetti
so far it looks like the real old mres from 1983 hold up better than the 1990s ones... strange.
cheers ken and son
The items layed out.everything pretty okay but creamer was rock hard and the tootsie roll tasted old paper....
The meal plated, the spaghetti was stil good but smelled a bit cheese sharp because of the parmesan but stil no bad taste

Re: 1991 Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
I've noticed that A LOT, early 80s MREs hold up so well compared to other MREs. I always wonder what the true story is on that one haha
Re: 1991 Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
maybe they nuced the mres more back in the old days ?

You aren't the first to notice this, that's for sure. I believe it has to do with the quality or shelf stability of some of the ingredients used, particularly suspect are the fats or oils used today that are now considered "healthier". Palm oil is one example of a supposedly "unhealthy" oil no longer used the the way it once was. It also happens to have a very long shelf life and is not prone to oxidize or go rancid. Anytime Canola oil aka "Rapeseed" is used, sooner or later it will take on varnish or paint like taste and odor. Have seen this with commercial peanut butter in sealed containers.
