2005 Pork Rib MRE Review

Post by SentientTootsieRoll » Tue Nov 17, 2020 12:00 am

For dinner today I felt like trying another decade and a half old MRE. This one is a Pork Rib MRE produced in 2005 by The Wornick Company. Let's see how this one stood the test of time.

Here's the inside of the ration prior to removing the components.

Here are the components laid out on a tray. This MRE includes 2 wheat snack breads, imitation boneless pork rib, toffee cookies, cheese spread, clam chowder, flameless ration heater and an accessory packet.

Here's a closeup of the pork rib and clam chowder in their retort pouches. As I normally do, I skipped using the flameless ration heater and placed them in boiling water for 10 minutes instead.

Here are the items in the accessory packet.

And here's the whole MRE, fully prepared!

The pork rib actually wasn't that bad. It was soft and chewy and had a mild sweet/salty and very subtle barbecue sauce flavor. I still prefer the freeze dried pork patty from the 1980s MREs but this wasn't bad either. The two wheat snack breads were a bit hard but were still edible and tasty. They were mildly sweet and grainy. The cheese spread was no longer good, it coated my tongue with a sour numbness. You can probably tell that just by looking at how dark it is. The clam chowder tasted fine but it was slightly coating my tongue with a subtle numbness so I decided against eating all of it. I really enjoyed dipping the toffee cookies in the coffee. They tasted just like sugar cookies with hard, chewy bits of toffee in them and it wasn't a bad way to finish this MRE off.

been wanting one of these haha, they always look so good
most wanted: RCIR, MCI/B units, IMPs, anything old, and a packet or two of RAFCO soup. PM if you've got these, or anything else to sell that isn't too expensive.

Good review! Man, I haven’t had that one for a long time. I miss the dehydrated pork patty as well. I used to get that one as a kid at the local Army/Navy store.

Where do you think they got the "Pork Ribs" from?

They re-hydrated all those rejected FD pork patties sitting in a warehouse somewhere, ha ha. Seriously though, some of the menus are derivative or obviously "old wine in new bottles" in the sense they mix and match recipes.

I like the "Pork Rib" it's just the ticket to hold back, for example to fill out some of the Vegetaryan entrees with. Not too bad with any of the Pasta entrees.
