A week of MREs

So today begins another crazy MRE experiment. My wife is out of town for the week so I thought this would be the perfect time for my longest MRE eating test yet. The goal is to eat nothing but MREs for the next week. A soldier in the field might be expected to eat three MREs a day but I'm a civilian who doesn't get out enough so I'm going to stick to two MREs a day.
I've done 3 days in a row before but never a whole week. In the past, I've taken these opportunities to dig all the old MREs out of my car, the garage, etc - places where I had then stashed away and places where they were subject to temperature extremes. I figured it'd be a good chance to see how the MREs held up. In my previous experience, I found that even a four year old MRE kept in a hot/cold/hot/cold car for two years still tasted perfectly good.
So this time I decided to crack into my newest case of MREs instead of eating through my old stock. This way, I could try the newer MREs and components. The case I'm eating through was packed on 05/12/2004 and is a case B.
Day 1: Sunday dinner: #20 - Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
I was happy to find the cheese spread in the MRE because it goes great with the spaghetti. But I was left with a condundrum...what to put on the wheat snack bread? I decided to cheat (so early and I'm already cheating) and grabbed an extra peanut butter packet I had laying around. I opened up the wheat bread and was surprised to find it looked different than the last wheat snack bread I had seen. The previous version I had was more like a square with a lot of little holes in it. This new version was the same thickness but was actually shaped like a real slice of bread. It's kind of funny because this stuff doesn't have any relation to real bread - maybe they just shaped it this way to make you think it was just like mom made. But I do have to say that this stuff has improved! The taste is much better than I've had in the past - I can't quite describe it - it's not like soft bread but it's also not like hard bread...it's kind of soft/hard/chewy/compressed bread.
Anyway...after chowing down on my wheat snack bread and peanut butter appetizer, I got my main course ready. I opened up the spaghetti box, took out the entree, put it in the heater. This is where I thought I was being smart. You see, with the older heaters, you'd put the water in, slosh it around a little to get the heater element wet, then stuff everything in the entree box to let it cook. But the last time I tried that with a 2004 heater, I was in for a surprise - these new heaters are fast! No sooner had I sloshed the water around before it started fizzing and heating up - it was a bear to get the entree stuffed back into the box because the heater was filling up with steam. So like I said...this time I thought I was being smart. I put the entree in the heater, put water in the heater, folded the top of the heater over, and stuffed everything in the box. *Then* I sloshed the water around and heard the pleasant sound of the heater going to work. So I left the contraption propped up on "a rock or something" and went away. 10 minutes later I returned only to find my MRE only mildy warm and with a big wet spot on the bottom side of the box. Yes, instead of folding the top flap of the heater over the top of the entree, I folded it over on the bottom...so when I sloshed the water around, it just started leaking out the bottom and didn't generate much heat.
Ashamed of myself for this rookie mistake, I put some more water in the heater, folded it over the *right* way this time...and stuck the cheese spread in the bottom of the box so it could get heated up, too. 10 minutes later supper was ready. Open entree, dump in salt, dump in tobasco, dump in cheese spread and yum! Cheesy hot spaghetti!
For my post-supper drinking pleasure, I had the strawberry dairy shake. I don't know #1 - how they expect you to actually use the shake packaging to mix up the drink and then #2 - actually drink the shake with only 6 ounces of water - wow...talk about some concentrated strawberry dairy shake! Not me this time...I took a regular glass, put in 10 ounces of water (could have done it with 12-16), poured the shake mix in, and then stirred it for a while. It was pretty good - kind of like drinking a slim fast or something similar (but with a lot of sugar and caloies).
This MRE also had carbohydrate fortified Applesauce but I decided to hold off on that for now...might have it for breakfast another day.
