Indian Entree Reviews
In doing some quick internet searching, I see that a cup of uncooked lentils has around 649 calories while a cup of cooked lentils has 230 calories:
Lentils, raw
http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/16069.html
Lentils, cooked
http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition- ... s2C-cooked
So I wonder if they figured the calorie count of that entree based on the uncooked numbers instead of the cooked numbers.

I never would have suspected that such a large percentage of the calories in lentils would be lost in cooking. Lentils are generally boiled, so the missing calories might show up in the water used for boiling. But consider green peas, they GAIN calories when cooked(http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/11305.html; http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/11304.html)
The common wisdom is that a McDonald's Big Mac at 540 calories is the epitome of fat, but there seems to be a suggestion that vegan foods are kicking McD's ass on the high-calorie frontier.

I don't think it's a matter of losing calories, I think it's a matter of mass. I'm just making up numbers here, but when you take raw beans and cook them up, they absorb water and expand. So one cup of raw beans might cooked up to three cups of cooked beans. Again, I'm just making up numbers, but that's how it always looks to me when I'm cooking up rice and/or beans.
Wow, I'm amazed! Who would have thought that our little community here contained the wealth of dietary knowledge that you guys can come up with? You guys rock! (and the site is even more valuable because of your sharing of knowledge).

Yes indeed Big Galloot,
Calories are easy to count of you know the 'nutritional values'.
Both Carbohydrates and protein provide 4 cal. per gram
fat provides 7 cal. per gram.
Anyone can do a little math. Good luck everyone
I just noticed that I replied to the post of Big Galloot at the end of page one. >> sorry. But it stil holds what I wrote.

Embarrassingly, I noticed that in the bottom of the "Nutrition Facts" box it says "Calories per gram Fat 9 - Carbohydrates 4 - Protein 4," but it somehow never got through to me that those three represented ALL of the possible calories until you pointed it out.Nawt wrote: Calories are easy to count of you know the 'nutritional values'.

Who says that MREinfo isn't educational?

mmmm
That Saag Chole looks like the stuff that the poor Indian villagers gave Indian Jones to eat, in The Temple of Doom. I'll have a bowl of that, I'll need the energy, to go get those rocks from the bad guys.
