Earlier today for brunch I decided to try Menu 17 - Pork Sausage Patty, Maple Flavored. It came out of the pouch like a rubber brick along with a pool of orange grease, smelled like a cross between pork and tuna, and resisted the edge of my spoon when trying to cut it despite being made of particle meat. It also didn't heat evenly despite 10 minutes in the ration heater. The parts that were warm tasted ok. I would not be a happy soldier if I had to eat this and the rest of my team got the other numbers, haha.
The maple muffin top was dense and moist, and not crumbly. Much like a good pound cake. The smoked almonds provided a welcome savory contrast to the rest of an otherwise sweet breakfast.
On a positive note, MRE peanut butter isn't bad and is fortified with vitamin C. Hopefully food scientists can replace the hydrogenated oil in it with something not bad for you. That way it'd actually be better than regular PB in terms of nutrition given the extra vitamin C. Also disappointing was the addition of coffee creamer as opposed to cocoa beverage. I can stand my coffee black, so I always prefer chocolate over a simple non dairy creamer. The orange beverage base came in a needlessly large packet with room to move, and was not fortified with additional nutrients vs. common sports drink.

Take two maple muffin tops, put sausage between. Hot is better, but even cold it is acceptable.

I agree with you for the most part, Shadow.
My frh worked great and heated the whole patty. It wasnt as mapley as i figured, but i did enjoy it for the most part. The syrup tasted cheap and full of corn syrup.
Texture of the patty was like a frozen breakfast sausage, but flavor was ok. I read to dump the liquid out first before sausage.
If i remember right, it was big on the calorie count, and fat, for such a small patty.
The muffin top was awesome and the nuts were a good salty snack to break the sweetness of the main.
That beverage base was 98% sugar, but extra water calmed it down.
In all, i would eat it again

Yes, next time I get a case B I'll break the muffin into halves and slide the patty in length wise, with the syrup as a sandwich condiment. Thank you for the suggestion, should be much better next time.Apocalypse wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 1:23 pmTake two maple muffin tops, put sausage between. It's all corn syrup with just enough maple flavor to taste any. I used to be an avid weight lifter and the hobby turns you in to a compulsive food label reader. The syrup sucks and the gov't could stand to spend the few extra cents on something better if they want this meal to keep our guys happy. Dollar store stuff tastes better.

I dunno, it's my favorite IMO.
The syrup isn't great but I've had worse. The muffin top is actually pretty good and has enough flavor to keep you satisfied.
Meat in MREs is hit or miss, but the sausage itself is pretty flavorful. I'll agree with you that the almonds are very good.
Also, I like MRE crackers. In just about anything.

You are my rock or something.
