2015 Ratatouille Review

So it kind of seems to me that Ratatouille was among the more unpopular menus during it's run. It looks like it lasted 5 years before being replaced. Generally speaking it seems like the vegetarian menus are less desirable. So I decided to pull a Ratatouille out of the case and give it a try. While I am not strictly a vegetarian, I am not opposed to eating that type of food.

Contents:
-Nut raisin mix
-Chocolate Dairyshake powder
-Mixed Fruit
-Peanut butter
-Ratatouille
-Crackers
-Hot beverage bag
-Hot sauce
-FRH
-Accessory pack

Starting with the fruit pack, not bad, pretty much the same taste as you might get out of a can of fruit cocktail but the fruit was a bit softer. I think it was just peaches and pears with 1 half slice of cherry just like the cans. Kind of a nice chance of pace side to pop up in your ration.

Next up crackers and smooth peanut butter. Not much to say about these, both were fresh, the crackers lack flavor ant the peanut butter is fine but a little sweet for my preference.

As for the nut raisin mix simply put it lacks salt. I assume that since the main has so much sodium (774 mg) that they try to save in other items but it leaves something to be desired in the nut raisin Mix.

As for the Ratatouille I have to say I was presently surprised it wasn't bad at all. A little bland on first tasting so a cheated a little and added a touch of Sriracha to brighten it up and it worked nicely. The main flavors I could identify was garlic and tomato. I would also say that it looked nothing like any Ratatouille that i had tried before. It pretty much looked like penne pasta in sauce and vegetables but coming out of an MRE this was expected.

There were no other drinks aside from coffee and the dairyshake which I skipped as dairy products don't always sit well with me.

All in all not a bad ration. I preferred this to the Asian beef strips I tried a few weeks back. I suppose I will have to try the Vegetarian Taco Pasta next as it replaced Ratatouille as menu 11 in 2016.

Final rating: :)

Cheers,
Jimmie

I agree; that was one of my favorites. I don't care of there's meat or no meat, as long as it is tasty and has some decent texture. In an MRE, pasta texture is going to be problematic because it was cooked so long ago. I can overlook that. In general, I find the veggie meals to have more flavor and better balance than the ones that supposedly feature meat. That's especially true for those meals with extruded chicken paste cubes, which are just horrid.

I believe the Veggie Taco Pasta is the replacement for ratatouille, and I find it to be almost as good, btw.

"Normal" people may either not believe me or label me crazy, but I know I'm in good company here, so let me say that I believe MRE ratatouille is the absolute best I've ever had. No kidding!

Great review! I am one of the few who enjoy this entree, and was sad to see it go. Thanks for sharing!
