US MRE Review Menu 10 Chili and Macaroni (2014) [Illustrated]

Post by YTFRC » Mon Jan 09, 2017 9:48 am

I'll just start of by stating I went into this review with a negative outlook on this menu. Over Hyped to put it politely, but like a Honda, everyone talks shit about them, and we all have had one!ImageImage
Lets start off with Skittles! These little sweet diabetic comma inducing sugary chews were quite pleasant and as you would expect, vary sweet! I do pine for the old days of when MRE's came with Starburst thou...

Next up is the Carrot Pound Cake! Not too sweet or sticky to hold. Has bits of shredded carrot and walnuts through out. Has a slight taste of cinnamon and or nutmeg. Texture was of a proper Pound Cake. I look forward to buying these on there own.

Crackers! Brittle, Spiteful, Tasteless squares! Personally, I prefer the Vegetable Crackers over the standard. They seem to hold up better AND have taste to them.

CHEESE!!! Cheese spread with Jalapeños none the less! The only thing that could make this better, is if there were bits of green pepper in it! The nice thing about this Cheese is that even when it's turned color a bit from orange to brown, It, to me at least still taste good!

Now with the Main Course, Chili and Macaroni! I was surprised at how good this was! Chili to Macaroni ratio was excellent! Now it's not going to taste like a Chef Boyardee Chili Mac, but they make a good attempt at it. as with almost every MRE i've had with ground beef in a sauce, at least to me are always a bit bland, lacking a punch of flavor. That's where the Red Pepper comes in, now unless you love spicy, I would not use as much as I did. Had to use up all the Skittles to get the burn and spicy flavor out of my mouth. Over all, it has turned into one of my top 5. Next time I would buy from from a different Packer like Sopakco and not Wornick

nice review. Very detailed.

Yes, you are correct on the red pepper, a little goes a long way.

Now you know why it's an old standby. And you got one from what I'm starting to believe is the least flavorful supplier. To my palate, Sopakco is consistently tastier, followed by Ameriqual.

Excellent pictures! Chili mac isn't one of my favorite MRE's but it is certainly filling and very edible. I agree, some of the hot sauces are crazy hot. Nice review.
I love the smell of 2 stroke oil and MRE coffee in the morning!

Agreed 100% about the manufacturers! Chili mac is one of the true dinosaur's, yet still alive and kicking!

A vote for chilli Mac +tabasco/hot sauce/red pepper powder from me too.
You gotta see it in the context of a long ration not "actual" food but in that context it's an old favourite for a reason. Seems to be always reliable.
It's better in freeze dried form from a MCW though
