...I´m sure the "EST" number is not the date code, although I don´t know what "EST" means (it appears on many US ration items), perhaps someone here can help.

...Here some "EST"-numbers, note that the "EST" 13018 of Nawts tray ration produced by STAR FOOD PROCESSING, INC. is the same as from MRE entrees produced by STAR FOOD PROCESSING, INC. It seems that every company has its own "EST" :...

Nawt, I'm not joking. You can distinguish the difference between sausage or beef and gravy. Both look and taste the same.
So I call it "mystery meat" which warmed with some nice biscuits, crackers or bread goes down easy and fill your stomach good.

It made me smile for a while. Not that I don't trust the Gov't or the USDA but the funny thing was that last year here in Holland there was a 'fuzz' about a meat processing company / food group that sold horse meat as beef and had horse meat blended with beef! But didn't tell or label it.
It surfaced and they had to recall all meat produced back to two years ago. Yeah right ... as if that would be on the shelves still . hahaha, most of it was already eaten.
So there was a joke going round that the only way to be sure not to eat any horsemeat was to eat fish

As long as you know you are eating/buying horse meat it´s OK. But here in Europa, they sold this horse meat as (more expansive) beef...
